SYMONS, Lloyd Eric

August 31, 1965 – May 19, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Lloyd Eric Symons on May 19, 2012 at the age of 46 years.

Lloyd was born in Hinton Alberta on August 31, 1965 to Clive and Sarah Symons. He was the youngest of 3 children and subsequently moved and attended school in Vancouver and Victoria. For a period of time, Lloyd worked with disabled children in Victoria where he developed a strong compassion for others. Around this time, Lloyd also took time to travel through Europe with travel becoming one of his passions in life.

He returned to school and completed his BCom from UBC and LLB from Dalhousie in 1994. He had an active law career, being initially called to the bar in Ontario, where daughter Mackenzie was born, then onto New York State and ultimately Alberta in 1999 where he settled down. Lloyd fell in love with Nicole at first sight in 2000 and they were married September 1, 2002 with baby Cassie arriving to complete their family in 2003. Lloyd and his 3 girls formed a tight family unit full of love and laughter.

Lloyd was a loyal and devoted family man, son, brother and friend with a terrific sense of humor and a smile and laugh that would light up a room. He was highly protective of those he loved; generous and considerate, always making special efforts to create special memories. He was never too busy to stop to offer a hand. Lloyd worked hard and played hard, and was very determined and driven to make the most out of life. He accomplished more in 46 years personally and professionally than many twice his age.

Lloyd was a senior corporate and mergers and acquisitions partner at the Calgary office of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. He moved to Calgary in 1999, where he continued his professional development. Lloyd was an extremely talented lawyer. His superior legal and negotiation skills were most certainly appreciated by both his peers and his clients. Lloyd’s expertise allowed him to be the senior counsel on more than ten billion dollars worth of transactions in the oil and gas sector over the last decade. Coupled with Lloyd’s legal leadership skills was his extraordinary calm and patient demeanour. All lawyers, students and staff who had the honour to work with Lloyd will attest to his steady, reliable mannerism. In short, he was the consummate professional and an irreplaceable gentleman.

While he will be deeply missed by all his family, friends, colleagues and clients he will not be forgotten for “To live in the hearts of those we love is never to die.”

Lloyd is survived by his loving wife Nicole; two beautiful daughters Mackenzie and Cassie; mother Sarah Symons; sister Michele Buttle (Mike) and their daughter Charlotte; brother Clifford Symons (Sumiko) and their children Sean and Marina.

Lloyd was predeceased by his father Clive Barry Symons in 1992

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) prior to the memorial service

  2. June Denbigh (nee Billaux) :

My heart goes out to Lloyds family.

I grew up with and went to school with Michelle. I often played @ the Symons’ home and was made to feel part of the family. Lloyd and Clifford were always joking with and “pestering” us, as younger siblings do, and it kept all of us laughing.

Mr. and Mrs. Symons were a great comfort to me when my father died when I was 16, and I was very grateful to “belong”.

As time separates lives, we drifted apart and came together and drifted apart, again.

It is with great sadness to read in today’s Vancouver Sun paper the passing of Lloyd Symons. At the same time it’s wonderful to see how accomplished Lloyd had become with his family and career.

I’m sure all who knew Lloyd will miss him deeply.

My heartfelt condolences go to his wife and children and to Mrs. Symons, Michelle and her family and Clifford and his family.

    Sincere regards,

    June Denbigh (nee Billaux)

  13. Linda Williams (Alberta Waste and Recycling) :

While I did not know Lloyd very long, his personality made a very strong impact in my life. I learned only today that Mr. Symons had passed away, when Lloyd’s brother-in-law came with Lloyd’s daughter, Mackenzie, to do some recycling at my trailer.

In general, I have noticed that recycling people tend to be wonderful, generous people who take cumbersome, messy items to be recycled and to help the planet. Mr. Symons was the epitome of a recycling person. He always took the time to do good things and always treated those around him with kindness and respect. Lloyd definitely made an impression and a difference in my life in the short time I knew him. I loved the fact that he never treated me like “trailer trash”.

Today, I had the honour of meeting his daughter, a wonderful young lady named Mackenzie, who came today with her uncle. Her intelligence and willingness to help shone through her sunny personality. As she assisted her uncle today, I heard her say, “Recycling is Fun”. Clearly, her father’s influence has impacted her in a profound way. She was undoubtedly the apple of his eye.

Lloyd was a good man who will be sorely missed by many. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the great loss your family has suffered this week.

    Sincerely,

Linda Williams (Alberta Waste and Recycling)
