Gisèle Sykes died peacefully on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, in her 79th year.
Much-loved and sadly missed by all of her family, Gisèle is survived by her husband of more than fifty-two years, J.R.W. (Rod) Sykes, her five children and their families, James (Elaine, Jeremy, Andrew, Evan), Henry (Molly, Christopher, Natalie, Peter), Mark (Sandra, Joseph, Hannah), Marie-Josee (Bruce Rodin, Jessica, Sarah, Stephanie), Anne-Marie (Nathan Hauber, Callum, Chloe, Georgia); and her two sisters and three brothers in Montreal, Claire Dorais, Lise Séguin, Richard Séguin, Denis Séguin, and Yvon Séguin and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, M. & Mme. J.A. Séguin and her favourite aunt, Mme. Cordule Gagnon. Gisèle considered her family and her children to be her life’s work and she derived great happiness from seeing them all well-launched in the world and happily married, all well-founded on the high principles and standards of conduct with which she raised them, and by which she herself lived. She was involved in volunteer work throughout her life, and she took special pride in the recognition of her fiftieth wedding anniversary by Pope Benedict in 2006. Gisèle was a very warm sociable person to whom everyone (including complete strangers) divulged their deepest secrets. Her sense of humor and keen wit allowed everyone to overlook her penchant for cheating at cards. Gisèle was passionate about politics and enjoyed spirited political discussions. She loved reading, sewing, knitting, baking and doing crossword puzzles.
