Virginia Daisy (Virgie) Sykes-Hawley of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at the age of 102 years, after living a long, wonderful and courageous life!
Virgie was born April 6, 1906 in Stearns County, Minnesota. Not long after, she and her parents made the long horse drawn journey to Canada to pioneer their homestead in Nut Mountain, SK. After her schooling, she took a job at Winnipeg General Hospital as a dietician. While continuing her training there, she met a young doctor named Percy Sykes, who she married in 1935. They soon left Winnipeg for Vancouver, BC to work at the Vancouver General Hospital. After the birth of her daughter Lenitia (Sykes) Hamilton in 1940, Virginia stayed home to be a mom. During WWII, while her husband was overseas, she went to be with her family in Saskatchewan and Oregon City until his return after the war. They then moved to Haney, BC and after her husband passed away in 1951, Virgie started a chicken farm and later met Sidney Hawley, who she spent the rest of her happy years with. They did many things together, including moving throughout the interior of BC, finally landing in Calgary in 1998 to be closer to her family.
