December 20, 1945 – Erdut, Croatia
December 28, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta
Ivan Suta of Calgary, cherished husband and father, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the age of 68 years.
Ivan was born at the end of the Second World War, the youngest child of Petar and Iva Suta.
In 1968 Ivan began his life in Canada after emigrating from Croatia to Toronto, where he married his long-time sweetheart, Manda. They eventually settled in Calgary although Ivan’s career in the construction industry took him across the country and to the farthest reaches of Canada’s north.
When he wasn’t working, Ivan enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a foodie and enjoyed fine wine. And he was well-read in history, politics and current affairs; an engaging debater, he always stuck to his guns. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends.
Ivan also found great fulfilment in being an active member of the Croatian community in Canada, first in Toronto and later in Calgary, and in the company of his fellow Croatian Canadians.
He was a devoted family man, an old school gentleman with a strong work ethic who lived every day of his life with integrity, modesty, generosity and kindness. His was a genuine soul and he is loved and missed.
Ivan is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Manda; son Peter; and daughters, Ivana and Lidija; in Croatia, by his brother Nikola Suta and family, sister Mandica Matas and family, nephew Ivan Serdarevic and family; brothers-in-law, Ivan Serdarevic and Rade Serdarevic of Calgary and their families; and many other relatives in Canada and Croatia.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Marija Bistrica Croatian Catholic Church (14680 Deer Ridge Drive S.E.) on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Ivan will be laid to rest in Croatia. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
