STUART, Rodney James

December 6, 1953 – Regina, SK
July 12, 2013 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rod “Stu” Stuart. Rod was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and in his formative years, travelled throughout Canada before settling in Calgary for the majority of his life.

Rod is survived by his father Thomas (Ella May) Stuart, sister Deborah Stuart (London, ON), and brothers Thomas (Lisabeth) Stuart (Vernon, BC) and Michael Stuart (Calgary), and niece Andrea (Trevor) Stuart, and nephew Aaron Stuart and many friends, including those for the Alberta College of Art and Design, his home away from home. Rod had a long and rewarding career at ACAD since 1993 as an audio-visual technician. He touched the lives of many students, staff and faculty through his tireless provision of assistance, support and instruction. Rod loved devising creative solutions to technical challenges and teaching students about technology that would support their art. Rod also loved music, and was a talented pianist. He also loved exploring Canada’s West Coast. Rod was known for his wonderful sense of humor, generous spirit, positive attitude and gentle nature. He maintained these attributes even as he struggled valiantly against lung cancer over the last nine months. Rod will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues and students.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. A Celebration of Rod’s life will be held at the Alberta College of Art and Design in October, details will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Rod Stuart Memorial Bursary care of Alberta College of Art + Design, 1407 14th Avenue NW Calgary AB T2N 4R3. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Stu Stuart, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. I am sorry for the loss of Stu. We became friends as he worked with me with on a project last year. He was both creative and worked hard to attain a very professional piece. I will miss Stu’s humour and gentle spirit.

  3. Thank-you Stu, for your help and your kindness. Many, many students would not have had the positive experience at ACAD that they did without your help. Rest in peace, and thank-you so much for being there.

  4. Karilynn Ming Ho :

Stu was the first person who taught me how to edit video, and little did I know then that I would still be doing it today. Although considered to be a technician, I truly believe that Stu was one of the best teachers at ACAD. He was a person who was generous, patient and kind (with a wicked sense of humour to boot). I hope that it brings you comfort to know how loved Stu was. He was a fixture at ACAD and contributed so much to the vitality and creativity of that place. He will be truly missed.

I’ve known Stu since he started at ACAD, he was one of a kind–always cheerful and unique in that I never heard him complain or speak ill of anyone. I can’t even think what the school will be like, he was a integral part of it. He was a master of making difficult situations easy and relaxed. He was an amazing man, and humble to a fault.

Stu was a positive and smiling presence at ACAD. The genuine article, Stu was enthusiastic in meeting any technical and creative challenge. I will miss his distinctive gait as he walked through the halls at school.
Stu was the epitome of grace and kindness.

  7. Marianna Maliszewska :

So many good memories from ACAD and thanks especially to Stu. I remember working on so many projects, usually short videos, and feeling so intimidated by all the high tech equipment at the time. Spent HOURS, DAYS, WEEKS in Stu’s studio. I don’t know, I just remember, waiting for him outside, with coffee in my hand, and then here HE was! It was such pleasure working with him, he made ‘impossible’ possible. I remembered he was very humble, kind and gentle spirit. I will miss him. Sending condolences to family.

I am sorry to hear about Stu. He was a great friend and colleague at ACAD…always helping me with documenting my work, and so kindly transferring all the millions of hours of videos I took of my kids onto tapes. We laughed a lot. He had a great sense of humor. Thank you Rod for you cheerfulness and friendship.

  12. Jonathan Levine :

I’m sorry not to have heard about Stu’s death last summer. We were old friends and co-workers from back before his ACAD days when he managed Active Components and worked in the electronics business. We fell out of touch when he went to ACAD, just bumping into each other from time to time and only recently reconnected around the time of his diagnosis. We’d planned to get together and catch up, but things slid the way they tend to. I’d been looking forward to seeing him again; now I’ll have to settle for being grateful for having know and worked with him and for sharing his fine taste in music and terrific sense of humour. He’ll remain one of the memorable personalities from the electronics industry in Calgary; known and appreciated by many.
