STUART, Mary Bernice

September 21, 1924 – February 16, 2013

Calgary’s animal population will mourn. It is with deepest heartache we announce the passing of a true, compassionate soul, Mary Stuart (nee Shymanski), beloved sister, aunt, cousin, friend and “patron saint” of animals.

Mary is now free to join her beloved husband Ross, brother Mike and parents Annie and Nick Shymanski. Mary was well known as “The Hat Lady” throughout her life in downtown Calgary, Chinook Centre and the Trinity Lodge. She always sported a stylish hat and “matching earrings”. Mary is survived by her extended family and many friends. Mary will be deeply missed, but never forgotten by all whose lives she touched. Until we meet again, God bless your heart Mary.

A Gathering will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, and in recognizing Mary’s love of animals, please give a stray a good home, or make a donation to the The Calgary Humane Society, 4455 – 110th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7, Telephone: (403)205-4455,

In living memory of Mary Stuart, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  1. Dorothy Holland :

I always enjoyed going over to Mary’s house for coffee. She was such a gracious hostess, and the stories from her past were quite heart warming. Her laugh was infectious, and I will surely miss her.

  3. Art Vanderwiel :

I have known Mary for most of my life. She was my Godmother and over the years we had lost touch but, I would often think of her. The memories I have of her were her laugh, her love of animals and her wonder hats.
She attended school with my Mother Lillian Whalen, who has also passed. I hope they are together now enjoying their friendship once again. Mary was a very special lady, she will be missed.

    Sincerely Annette Peal (Whalen)

  5. Lorne and Eileen Stuart :

We are so sorry to hear that Mary has passed away. She was such a great and classy lady. As we live in Red Deer the only times we really had a chance to visit with Mary (and Ross) were at birthday parties or by chance at June and John’s or at Dad and Helen’s. Every time we spoke to Helen we would ask about Mary, and Helen kept us up to date. Mary and Ross had such an influence in our outlook on life. They will live on with us in memory.
