June 18, 1924 – June 29, 2012

Lucy Strother beloved wife of Bob Strother, mother to Rob and Ralph, special friend to daughters in law Kathryn and Sue, and dear “Nana” to Lauren, Kristi and Christine passed away peacefully on June 29, 2012 in the presence of her family. She was born in Salem Oregon and moved very early in life to Edmonton Alberta. She was raised by her parents Dora and Tom Coulson and was the eldest of six children including Betty, Ray, Herb, George and Doreen. Lucy met her Bob, who predeceased her, at the University of Alberta right after World War II. They moved soon thereafter to Calgary, where they lived the rest of their lives married for fifty-five years. Lucy was known as a kind and loyal friend to countless individuals – quick to lend a hand to a rich group of friends and neighbours. She led a life filled with integrity and stressed in her wisdom the importance of giving to others, being present when called upon and the power of actions. Whenever a family member or friend was in need, she was sure to be present. Known for her talents in note writing, card games, knitting and arts and crafts – everything she touched was a treasure. Especially dear were the items she rescued from garage sales. She loved entertaining and holidays were special celebrations to her. “Nana” took great pride in her granddaughters and any moment with them was a treasured gift. What never went unnoticed to those close to her was her keen intellect. She graduated high school two years early and was a voracious reader of the newspaper, magazines and books. Her knowledge for dates, special events and key moments was deep, broad and uncanny. She loved deeply and had room in her heart for all who touched her life. Special thanks goes out to “Uncle Bill” for his devotion to Mom and Dad and to Rosalena where she lived out her last years enriched with love and kindness. Her life will be celebrated at a Funeral Mass on July 11, 2012 at 11 AM at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive South West). A reception will be held afterwards at the church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Emeritus Fund at The Calgary Foundation in Lucy’s name.
