STRANDLUND, Gordon Roy

October 5, 1949- Calgary, AB
September 22, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Gord passed away Sunday, September 22 at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta at the age of 63 with his loving wife Brenda by his side.

He is survived by his wife Brenda, his two daughters Kelsey Cassels and Christy Thompson (Gerald) and four cherished grandchildren Braydon and Kayda Cassels and Van and Kate Thompson. He is also survived by his younger sister Linda Repp (Grant). Gord was happiest spending time with all his family, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles and his dear mother-in-law Betty Barr.

An original “Young Canadian” 1964-1967, Gord’s love of music was always present in his life. Some of his fondest life experiences were building the family cabin at Columbia Lake, BC, spending time at his uncle’s farm in Broadview, SK, hiking the West Coast Trail with his best friend Bob Bannon and his trip to Scotland and England with Brenda and the girls. Throughout life his God was in nature, hiking, camping, quading, boating, fishing, golfing and anything that brought him to the great outdoors. From diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s, Gord and Brenda were determined to make a difference to those whose lives are affected by this disease by raising awareness, creating change, and raising funds for Alzheimer’s research. With the support of family and friends they successfully raised $85,000 at “Gord’s Game” for Alzheimer’s golf tournaments. All proceeds were donated to research.

A Celebration of Gord’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Gord, may be made to support Cognitive Research at the University of Calgary. Cheques should be made payable to “University of Calgary,” with “Dr. Eric Smith Cognitive Research” written in the memo line, and mailed to : Fund Development office, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, 3330 Hospital Drive N.W. Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N1

  6. Hi Brenda and Family – I am so sad to hear of Gordie’s passing. I have been thinking back on a lot of great memories and the houseboating trips with Gord as our Captain have been on my mind. What great times we all had, what fantastic memories we have! There is nothing I can say that will ease the pain but know he is sadly missed by all who loved him. Take care of yourselves, love Carolyn

  7. Martin and Charlotte Whiteley :

“And they call the wind Maria” and “Out in the west Texas town of Alpaso” are songs that when I hear I am reminded of a favourite memory of Gord. we are sitting in the Hinton’s backyard around the fire pit and listening to Gord sing with his deep and resonating voice. What a privilege that was. Our deepest condolences and love to your family.

Hi Brenda – Although we have lost touch with each other you were often in my thoughts. By chance I just discovered Gord’s obit and wanted to send my condolences. You’ve had a difficult time of it but I know you shared many good years together. My sister-in-law was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 68 which also seems too young.

I know you’ll survive this with your positive attitude.
