  1. Lise Blanchette :

It is with sincere sympathy that I send my condolences to the family. Dr. Strafford was someone we could aspire to be caring, generous and a good sense of humour. It was wonderful to see these traits exhibited at the 20th Anniversary of the Brenda Strafford Society. Again at the Volunteer recognition dinner. Thank you Dr. Strafford for being you and for supporting so many. May your memories of him help you through your journey of grief.

  2. Dr. Strafford was at times a daunting inspiration to those of us who had the privilege of knowing him. I will miss him greatly. Jackie Robinson said that “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” The many both here and in the Caribbean who benefited from his assistance attest to the worth of his long and productive life Thank you..

Our deepest condolences to the family & friends of Dr. Strafford. It has been my greatest pleasure working with “Doc” on the “Village of Hope” project, here in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

He will be sorely missed but we must redouble our efforts to ensure the great work he has done for the less fortunate, continues. That, I’m sure, is what he would want from us all.

  6. While working for Dr. Strafford I learned three things.
    1. No is not an option.
    2. Hopeless is not forever.
    3. Retirement is for squares.

I am forever grateful for the years I worked for him. While sometimes frustrating that he would push me to solve a problem I thought was hopeless, he taught me that doing the right thing was worth the stress, and when the right thing meant bringing a light into someone else’s dark world, we have a moral responsibility not to give up; to access every single resource possible, to call in every favour, and to always build new bridges when the government burns down the old ones.

My heartfelt sympathy to the family. This is certainly the end of an era.

So very sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Strafford, I wish to send my warmest wishes and condolences to his family and many friends.

Dr. Strafford was a truly exceptional man and an amazing facilitator of efforts to improve the health and quality of lives of so many – both within Alberta and internationally. His passion and unwavering support of vulnerable populations (including all of his efforts in geriatric medicine and women’s health globally) was truly exceptional.

On a personal level, I owe so much of my success (personally and academically) to Dr. Strafford, The Brenda Strafford Chair in Geriatric Medicine provided support that allowed me to come to the University of Calgary in 1997, and this ongoing support provided the foundation for my research efforts there for 14 years. I am most grateful and will never forget his role in my personal and professional life. I am true this is true for hundreds of others who were touched by his generosity.

Thinking of you all at this sad time,
    Colleen

He was an amazing man and one who helped the poor to the best of his ability.
We in Montego Bay shall miss him not only for his generosity, but for the anticipated get-togethers every couple months that he visited here. Up to the time of his death, we were contacting him through his agent here with regard to sick people needing to be hospitalized.
The Brenda Strafford Foundation Medical Centre is an exemplary edifice built by him here at Albion in Montego Bay for the benefit of the sick and poor . Thank you.

I had the pleasure of working for Dr. Strafford and the Foundation for nearly 3 years, and it was truly an honor getting to know him. For my first year at the Foundation, I was extremely intimidated by him, but once I got over the fear, I found him to be a very kind, caring, and compassionate man.

He was always present at all of the Manors, be it during events or just a visit, which showed me as much he was a business man, he was an even better human being. He cared deeply about the residents, and those who cared for them.

My condolences to the entire Strafford family, my thoughts and prayers are with each one of you.

I am saddened by the untimely passing of your Dad. I knew him during his time in Medciine Hat and found him to be a very engaing person. When we chatted during our AOE presentation I found that he had an exciting life, doing well, caring, and with a completed “bucket list” that many would envy. Setting up a Foundation to honour your Mom made his caring extend to many, many people and it will continue to do so.

  21. Dr. Hazel Shillingford-Ricketts :

I was shocked by the news of the passing of Dr. Barrie I. Strafford. Two days before the eye clinic faced the passing of our driver of 20years. Michael was the only driver Dr. Strafford felt comfortable driving him along the winding mountainous roads as he visited the four primary care health centres he funded.
Dr. Strafford was like a father and a mentor to me. He co-sponsored my training in ophthalmology in Ottawa as he was of the firm belief that training a national to provide eye care was the most sustainable means of continuing the legacy of the Brenda Strafford Foundation eye services in Dominica.
He will be surely missed but I will cherish the fond memories of his hearty laugh over a good bottle of red wine.
On behalf of my husband His Excellency Dr. Paul Ricketts Ambassador at Large, our children, the staff of the Brenda Strafford Foundation Eye Centre and the many patients in Dominica who benefitted from his generosity, I offer our sincere condolences to his family. Be comforted with the knowledge that he left his footprint on the sands of humanity as he worked to help those in need.

    To the Strafford Family.
Our deepest sympathy to Miles, Roxanne, Sheree & Lisa on the death of their father Barrie.
Our Heartfelt thanks from the Caribbean, where Barrie’s generosity knew no bounds.
I first met Barrie in Jamaica through my colleague, Dr. Bernard Benjamin, our mutual friend there, at the time. Bernard and myself were both Dominicans, and so we invited Barrie to visit Dominica, and he fell in love with this “little island” !
He immediately set up a Health Center for community patient screening in Salisbury, one of the villages on the Caribbean coastline.
Then, he trained our most talented lady physician, Dr. Hazel Shillingford – Ricketts to be a fantastic Ophthalmologist, and who has since returning home from Canada, has created a “Center of Excellence” in Eye Care for the entire island, inclusive of screening programs, in – Hospital Surgery, and maintenance programs in glaucoma control, Public Education, etc.
We are working towards erecting a “BARRIE STRAFFORD CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN EYECARE HOSPITAL” in Dominica, as our tribute to Barrie’s amazing help and contributions to the people of this Island.

I write in my capacity as Chair of the Board of the Good Shepherd Foundation to register the condolence of every member of the Board and each member of staff of the Hope Medical Clinic and the Hope Hospice to the family and friends of Dr. Barrie Strafford and the Brenda Strafford Foundation.

The news of Dr. Strafford’s passing has left us in shock. Frankly, we feel somewhat diminished since there is now a void in our organizational association which no one else will be able to fill.

We will not and cannot forget promises made by Dr. Strafford to our Foundation which always became promises kept. His word was his bond and his faithful stewardship to the work of our Foundation and his generous support of its sustenance and growth are known, recorded and deeply appreciated.

We shall miss him, but are buoyed however by these fond memories which we have of his visits with us and his deep commitment to service will illumine our efforts at all times. He was truly an exemplar!

May his soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine on him.

  30. To the Strafford family, Mike and the Brenda Strafford Foundation,
I am so saddened and shocked on hearing of Dr. Strafford’s passing. I will personally miss him. We thank the Lord for the life and dedication of this giant of a man to the poor and marginal especially at the Hope Hospice and the Hope (Teaching) Health Clinic at the Brenda Strafford Medical Center in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He was not just a generous benefactor, but a genuine friend and a true citizen of the world.
I pledge to help to continue to perpetuate his legacy and his vision. Please accept my condolence and may his soul rest in peace. I and other members of the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral have been praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the repose of his soul.
Recently I was privileged to have attended the annual fund raiser of the Good Shepherd Foundation International in Ft. Lauderdale, U.S.A. And I was filled with great joy and pride when Dr. Strafford accepted the 2016 Humanity Award from His Grace, Archbishop Charles Du Four.
May the Lord continue to bless the Strafford family and the Brenda Strafford Foundation.

I knew Barrie for more than 20 years and thoroughly enjoyed his company and his sense of humour. He was an amazing individual. I was dean of the Medical School in the 90’s and we were struggling to develop programs in geriatrics. Barrie stepped forward and established the Brenda Strafford Chair – a few years later he established the Chair in Alsheimer’s Disease. This showed both his amazing concern for the care of the elderly as well as an equally amazing generosity. The University will always be grateful for these very significant contributions and his guidance as the programs were developed. We will all miss him.

The recent passing of Dr. Barrie (“…spell it with an ‘ie’ please”) Strafford, a truly remarkable man, is a huge loss to his family, many close friends, thousands of Albertans and very many beyond Canada. Visually, Dr. Strafford always ‘wore’ his constant drive to excel as an impeccable businessman – while his inner source was a strong compassion and dedication to the disadvantaged, especially the elderly and mothers and their children fleeing from domestic violence. His family must be very proud of his numerous achievements. As a Former MLA of Calgary-West, I wish his family comfort in knowing the impact of his leadership and values will be evidenced for a very long time. Rest in Peace, Dr. Strafford.

To The Strafford Family, Mike, The Brenda Strafford Foundation Family, Friends of the late Dr. Barrie I. Strafford,

“Wonderful memories are what we have to remember our dearly beloved Dr. Barrie I. Strafford. I believe that God will accept him with open arms for all the good he has done while he was on this earth.”

My heart is truly saddened at the passing of our beloved Dr. Barrie I. Strafford. It has been my greatest pleasure working with Dr. Strafford managing the Village of Hope project in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Dr. Strafford was kind and gentle. He would do anything to help to improve the life of the less fortunate.

Looking back on all the good memories we were able to have with him, we can now smile at the fact that we could share these special memories with him before he passed on. We will ensure the great work he has done to help the less fortunate in Montego Bay continues and most of all to make his dreams for The Village of Hope becomes a reality.

Oh behalf of the Management, Staff, Friends and Beneficiaries of The Village of Hope, Hope Hospice, Hope (Teaching) Health Clinic and Summerset Villa, I offer our condolences.

In 2009, Dr. Strafford and the Brenda Strafford Foundation made it possible to serve 14 homeless families each day by allowing the Children’s Cottage Society to operate Brenda”s House in the Foundation’s lovely large home in SW Calgary. The gift he generously gave each year is shelter and support and not once did he ask for anything in return. I know that he was proud to know that hundreds of children were supported in a respectful and positive way because of his contribution. the Children’s Cottage will miss him and will make sure that those needing help at Brenda’s House remembers him. I am very saddened to hear the news of the passing away of Dr. Barrie Strafford. l have known Dr. Strafford for more than thirty years. He was a pioneer and innovator in continuing care. His vision of continuing care is always ahead of his time. His organization built the first Aging in Place Complex in Alberta through the construction of the Wentworth Manor, his organization is also the first one in Alberta to use the MDS suites of tools, way ahead of the provincial implementation. His vision of linking research and education with continuing care and geriatrics helped to open doors to the learning world for the delivery of continuing care services. He has dedicated his life to the improvement of seniors’ services in the province of Alberta. We thanked him for his generosity and dedication. His contribution will never be forgotten.

“Tough but fair”. That’s how Dr. Strafford summarized his philosophy, once he hired me to manage Institut Brenda Strafford in Haiti. I like fair. That suited me. Tough was something else though. For who wants a tough boss? Yet, over the years, I quickly realized that, as much as he wanted to, Dr. Strafford could never be actually tough when it came to supporting the hospital. His heart spoke, loud and clear, and he would listen to it. And fair he was. He wanted the Institut Brenda Strafford to do something valuable and beneficial to the Haitians and as far as I am concerned, never said no to whatever was necessary to do so. Thousands of Haitians could testify to the quality of health care they received, thanks to Dr. Strafford’s generosity. If that is not an accomplishment, I wonder what is. Thank you Dr. Strafford!
