February 18, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

John Peter Leberecht Strack passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the age of 77 years.

The younger of two children of Johanna and Eugene Strack, Peter was born on June 8, 1936, in Saskatoon, SK. He received his degree in Geology from the University of Alberta in 1958 and moved to Calgary where he married his wife of forty-four years, Anna Marie in 1960. Peter spent the beginning of his career as a geologist in some of the more remote areas of Canada and then some time abroad, but managed to make it back to Calgary when each of his four children were born, and settled here permanently in 1968. Peter was an active leader of Boy Scouts while his three boys were young and participated in Curling and other activities at the Winter Club as well as being a twenty-two year member of the Norseman Ski club. Peter spent many summers at his second home in the Shuswap where he enjoyed time with his family and made many new friends. His love of travel took him and his wife to many places around the world.

Peter is survived by his sister Anne Strack of Edmonton; children John and Diane of Kelowna and their children Randi and David, along with his first great-grandchild Kamarah-Lea; David and Jana of Friendswood, TX and their children, Jordan, Jade and Jett; Andrew and Sherry and their son Connor; and his daughter Karen.

    John, David, Andrew and Karen,
So sorry to hear about your Dad. Your Mom and Dad were the “cool aunt and uncle” in my life. I will always remember having many birthdays at the cabin when we were kids. Hope you have a rememberance tomorrow that is full of great memories and lots of love.

  2. Rich and Gill Earl :

I am so very sorry to hear about Peter.

It has been many years since I last saw Pete. I was introduced to him in the 70’s while studying at SAIT. An instructor “encouraged” some of us students to sign up as volunteers at Scouts for a possible extra mark or two come exams!!!! Several of us signed up as assistants which is how we met Pete and which led to many years of good times and friendship. Scouts led to “choir practice”and a few nickel ante poker games so winners and losers could all have a good time. Pete was always someone you could count on for a good time with his sense of humour and integrity even when confronted with a bunch of ‘wired’ Boy Scouts (some of whom might have even been his own sons). I’ll raise a glass to Pete at the appropriate time here in Honolulu tomorrow.

    Fond memories
    Rich and Gill

  4. Barrie and Julie Orr :

Barrie and I will miss Peter very much. We have had New Year’s Eve Parties, Cookie Parties, Poker Parties, Lunches, and many, many laughs. A week in Cabo last year brought many memories also. Pete was a good friend and a good father. Pete was very proud of his children and they were certainly very proud of him.
    We will cherish his memory.
