November 10, 1933 – June 30, 2012
Our family sadly announces the passing on of Gil, husband, father and grandfather and uncle.
Gil is survived by his wife Leona; son Rick; daughters, Sandy and Lisa; grandchildren, Leigh, Kate, Laura, and Kyra; and his brother Dennis. He was predeceased by his infant daughter Jerilyn in 1955; his mother Jean; his father Henry; and brothers, Joe, Art and Rene.
Gil was born in Winnipeg where he grew up, worked and married. He joined the navy and served his country as a communications specialist for twenty-three years, living on both coasts and serving on many different ships. He retired and settled down in Calgary where he started businesses in construction and the food service industries. We remember him as a hard worker and committed provider for his family. Gil developed cancer in 1981, and to everyone’s amazement survived with this for 31 years, moving in and out of remission, proving his doctors wrong more than once. He had an astonishing tenacity for survival and can be a stellar example that the “C word” is not an automatic death sentence. His passing on leaves a hole in our family that will take some time to heal.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church (Corner of 4th Street and Northmount Drive N.W.) on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
