STONE, Robert (Bob) Philips

November 3, 1925 – Norway House, Manitoba
July 24, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of long-time Calgary resident, Bob Stone, on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Agapé Hospice in Calgary.

Bob was born in Norway House, Manitoba, the fourth child of Ervin and Nellie Stone. He grew up in Ottawa and spent his summers at the beloved family cottage on Charleston Lake. Bob was proud to serve his country in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II.

In 1946, Bob fell in love with Alberta and spent the rest of his life here. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1950; and in 1951 he married Anne Petryni. Most of his working life was spent in the Oil and Gas industry, where he was a well-known Landman. In his retirement years, he loved his vacations to Hawaii and Las Vegas; and especially to his cottage on Sand Lake, Ontario, where he spent many happy summers.

Bob is survived by his loving and devoted wife of sixty-two years, Anne; two daughters, Julia (Fred) Payne and Nina (Bryan) Wyrostok; as well as four grandchildren, Scott (Leah) Payne, MarySue (Jason) Henneberry, Kate (Mike) Noppers, and Claire Wyrostok; and four great-grandchildren. He is survived also by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bob was predeceased by his parents and five siblings.

He was an extraordinarily generous and loving man, very devoted to family and friends; and a man of great integrity. He had a terrific sense of humour and wit; and maintained till the end that he had been blessed with a perfect life. He will be missed by all who knew him.

To my extended family in Canada, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. This for me has been a time to reflect on how great of a person Uncle Bob really was. I feel honored to have known him. To have listened to his words of wisdom or just a silly joke. We always looked forward to Aunt Anne and Uncle Bob’s visits. He was a generous, kind hearted, selfless person. He will be greatly missed. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

  6. Julie Murray Hopkins :

Sad day in our family today, we lost our beloved Uncle Bob Stone in Canada. He was a great man that helped our family out in many kind ways through the years. Some of you may remember him and Auntie Anne visiting us each summer. He was always was one of my favorite uncles in my life. I enjoyed every single visit and phone call with him. When my Dad wasn’t able to walk me down the aisle on my wedding day Uncle Bob stepped in for him and gave me away. He was my first visitor when I was a mere few weeks old and continued to visit every summer up until he took sick two summers ago. He was a big hearted man, kind, gentle, and brilliant. He could keep a straight face and tell you a joke like it was a story and you would laugh when you realized it. A prince among men, honorable, kind, loving, smart, patient, big hearted . In our hearts forever, thank you for all you have done and for just being you. I love you Uncle Bob <3 xoxoxox Julie

Dearest Anne, Julia, Nina, their families and grandchildren.
Ed and I and the kids have been off the grid for 2 weeks at the lake etc; please accept our apologies for this late message. I spoke to Julia the day dear Bob went to join his siblings and parents in the great beyond….we loved him so much and miss him greatly. His sense of fun and his energy welcomed us every summer at our family gatherings and at his cottage. We spoke to the owner of the Cove restaurant in Westport last week and told her the news; she remembers him and Anne very well and sends her condolences. Every where we went, including Forfar and our parents and grandparents graves, reminded us of Bob and his siblings and family. We sincerely wish you all the peace and love we can muster at this sad time. We will never forget the enormous efforts Bob and Anne and family made when our parents were ill and then gone. LOVE, Caroline and family
