STOLBIE, Iris Marie (nee Athanassiadis)

February 7, 1923 – April 3, 2013

Iris Marie Stolbie (nee Athanassiadis), our beloved Nana, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the age of 90 years.

Iris was born in Cairo, Egypt to parents John and Ines Athanassiadis (nee Yellitich). She was raised in Cairo and spent the first twenty years of her life travelling throughout Europe and she eventually met her husband Victor. She soon immigrated with Victor to Vancouver, BC where they started their family. They raised two sons John and Gregory. Iris and her sons later relocated to the Kootenay Bay, BC area where she spent several active years living and working at the Yasodhara Ashram. In her time in the Kootenays, she made lifelong friends. Following the Ashram, Iris and her sons moved to Nelson, BC where her life was centered around her sons and enjoying these friendships. During this time she continued her love of travel with an extended trip to Europe with her son Greg. Iris lived in Nelson, BC until 1984. She then joined John and his wife Sandra in Calgary, AB to help raise her two precious granddaughters, Tamu and Zia. Iris’ main focus was her family. She devoted herself to activities with them, much of that time being spent outdoors. She also joined the Kerby Center where she pursued her passion for painting. Her incredible ability to speak seven languages made her many friends in her lifetime. Iris touched so many lives and will be lovingly remembered for her kindness and everlasting compassion.

She is survived by her dearest children, John Stolbie of Calgary, AB and Gregory Stolbie of Toronto, ON; her loving daughter in-law Sandra Elliott-Stolbie and her darling granddaughters Tamu and Zia Stolbie of Vancouver, BC. She was predeceased by her husband Victor.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Free the Children, 233 Carlton Street Toronto, ON M5A 2L2, Telephone: 1-416-925-5894, www.freethechildren.com.
