STILLINGER, Janet “Jan” Lynn

July 5, 1954 – April 6, 2013

Jan’s life was gifted to the Horncastle family July 5, 1954 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. She was gifted to heaven on April 6, 2013 in Calgary. She spent most of her 58 years in Calgary but her Sask roots held strong from an upbringing in Prince Albert, Maple Creek, Regina and Cochin. She married Rich Stillinger in 1991 and they brought Danell and Dawson into their family February 22, 1996. Jan had her first battle with cancer in 2000, conquering both lymphoma and pancreatic. The next thirteen years became the most meaningful moments of her life.

We might have lost our “Janny” but we have many things she gave to us along the way that can never be taken away. She created a spirit that will forever be felt during Roughrider games, campfire times, opening a bottle of red wine, walking through Chapters, enjoying a great cup of tea, walking our dogs, vacuuming up cat hair, looking for a ride to the airport, going to Christmas craft sales, shopping at garage sales, wearing our Silpada jewellery, picnicking in Fish Creek park, decorating our Christmas trees, running our next road race, caring for our ailing parents, and showering our nieces and nephews with unstoppable love and life adventures. And because of her, when we say “Don’t sweat the small stuff” we will mean it.

To celebrate Jan’s life, her family would like her friends to join them to share “Jan stories” together at a campfire picnic on May 11 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Fish Creek Park, Calgary (Glennfield Group Use area A East). Forward condolences through

Rich, Dawson and Dannell, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Jan was amazing and so fun to be around. I enjoyed a lot of wonderful chats with her at school events and when dropping off or picking up Peter at your house. I think he would have just moved in, “Mrs. Stillinger” was always fun and made great food! Dannell and Dawsons many friends always felt welcome. Jan just had a way of making everyone feel special. Always a ready smile and that great laugh! So personable and real, she will really be missed. Her love for her family was so evident in all she said and did because you were her pride and joy and the love of her life. Her love will always surround you. When I remember Jan I will always smile and be thankful for knowing her.

  2. Cindy and Mark Stephen and family :

What a blessing that you had her for all those years after she beat it the first time. She was such a shining light. She had bottomless enthusiasm and cared deeply about everything and everyone. Dawson and Danell, she loved you guys fiercely. So devoted and so proud of all of you. She was always up for an adventure – so giving of herself, especially when you all moved from Haysboro and she continued to help with grandparent reading program at the school. When her mother died, she knew she was in the presence of God – that God’s hand was everywhere and in everything. Dont’ be afraid of the future because your mother will guide you every step of the way. Our deepest sympathy Rich. Your life was forever changed by a short little lady who could convince anyone to do anything – as you well know!

  4. I will never forget her witty comments and pancake Tuesdays. She was an adult I knew I could trust and she truly cared. I will miss our friendly banter that always got on Dawson’s nerves. I am very sorry she passed away and wish it could have been any other way.

  6. Sally Haggis :

Rich, Dannell and Dawson, thinking of all you. Jan tucked me under her wing as I got involved with the Haysboro Community Assoc. and we shared a need to create a ‘community’ and enjoyed serving. Although we’d lost touch over the years, I will forever remember her warmth and easy laugh. Take comfort in each other and that her life was one very well lived.

Jan was a wonder woman. When she first showed up for a Running Room running clinic, no one would know her trials and challenges. She motivated the people in her running group subtley- by doing. She was motivated to be in good health and by that she motivated. I shaved my head with Jan, I shared dog stories with Jan. I loved Jan. When my son passed away- Jan presented me with an Angel candle. It’s flame now carries two angels.

  10. Alexandra Dutka :

I will never forget how much Jan was like a second mother to me. She always found ways to make me smile and laugh and she was truly amazing. I will always cherish the camping memories and the times that Danell, me, Jan and Mary spent telling stories around the campfire. She has touched my heart in so many ways and she is also a great cook. I loved how she would call me “grasshopper” and I am very sad that this had to happen. I really will miss her.
