STEWART, Robert (Bob) Victor

August 23, 1928 – July 13, 2012

Bob Stewart passed away suddenly on Friday, July 13, 2012.

Bob was born in Stettler, AB, the youngest of three boys. He was raised in Edmonton and graduated from high school there, before beginning his 36-year career with Oilwell Supply in 1947. He married his beloved wife Irene in 1949. He and Irene moved to Calgary with their five sons in 1967, living in the neighbourhood of Scarboro for many years. Together, Bob and Irene forged strong friendships in Scarboro and, for the last 14 years, in the Horizon Village community. In both communities, Bob happily volunteered his time and skills. Family was always at the centre of their lives, and during their almost 60 years of marriage Bob and Irene spent countless hours guiding, nudging, teaching and supporting their sons, and later their daughters-in-law and grandsons. Bob was a devoted father, always proud of his sons and their endeavours, and always willing to lend a hand — or stand back and offer advice so the son in question could learn a skill hands-on. Bob’s career took him to Wetaskiwin and Swift Current as a young man, with a young family in tow, before returning to Edmonton and later moving to Calgary. The qualities that made him such a wonderful husband, father and friend also allowed him to thrive in his professional life. His strong moral code, work ethic, intelligence, patience, decisiveness, generosity, good humour and compassion helped him to move up the ranks into an executive position with Oilwell Supply. He retired in 1983 to begin a life of woodworking in his shop and travelling with Irene. Their travel adventures gave them great joy.

Bob is survived by his sons Rob, Neil (Linda), John (Donna), David (Crystal) and Tom; and grandsons Sean, Jake, Will, Sam, Andy and Ian. He is also survived by his brother Doug, of Edmonton, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dear wife Irene, his daughter-in-law Sandy, his brother William, and his parents, William and Rebecca Stewart.

A farewell gathering, with refreshments to follow, will be held at the Coach House (Horizon Village, 16 Coach Side Terrace, S.W., Calgary) on Monday, July 30, 2012; at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through No flowers please. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, #204, 1608 – 17 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB, T2T 0E3. Telephone: (403) 255-7100,

  4. Bruce and Judi :

We first met Bob and Irene as parents of our friend, Rob, when we were young people finding our way in life. They became very special to us and we will remember the good times with them – their visits to us on the island and Bob’s once-a-year excursions here with Rob in the ‘Intruder.’ We will remember the love and caring they showed us and they will always be in our hearts. Next time ’round, Bob.
