STEWART – John Charles (Jack)

April 28, 1932 – March 11, 2011

Jack passed away peacefully after a long illness at the age of  78.

Jack was born in Tuberose, Saskatchewan and grew up in Fillmore, Saskatchewan.  Jack was married to his childhood sweetheart and best friend, Vivian (Lubiens), for 40 years until Viv’s death in 1991.  Jack was entrepreneurial from a young age and his career in business started in the building supply industry in various towns in Saskatchewan.   Jack, Viv and their three children moved to Calgary from Regina in 1967 where Jack began a long career in advertising first with CFCN radio and later with his own advertising agency – Stewart Advertising.   Throughout his career he developed many long friendships with his clients and colleagues and was respected by all.  Jack and Viv enjoyed numerous trips to their vacation place in Maui.   Jack loved to golf, but hated losing golf balls.  He was an avid water-skier despite occasionally nearly losing his dentures in the lake. He was a proud Scotsman and celebrated Robbie Burns’ Day every year with his brother Cliff who passed away in 2010.   Jack was a very proud Calgarian and loved the Stampede. He enjoyed his involvement with the CFCN Chinook Centre Breakfast and more recently with Shaw GMC and their chuckwagon sponsorship. Jack married Connie Linckens in 2005 and she provided love and care throughout Jack’s long illness.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters – Carol McMillan and Muriel Glenn, his three children – Gloria, Drew and Gary (Sharlene), his grandchildren – Bryce (Angela),  Johnathon, Caylee and Ryan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues.

The family would like to thank  the staff of Unit 74 of the Rockyview General Hospital for their excellent care of Jack over the last several weeks.

Condolence Messages

  1. Having worked for Jack for 7 years at Stewart Advertising, he holds a special place in my heart and that of my family who also know him well. I am a better man for having known him. Jack was more than an employer, he was a friend and always treated me as such. He was and is one of the good ones whom I know will be truly missed in this city but welcomed home by those on the other side. Rest in peace Jack… you have earned it!

I grew up across the street from the Stewart home in Fillmore. Jack was 6 years older than I and was always my idol. Jack taught me to play the drums. We haven’t seen much of each other over the last 60 years but I’ve always admired Jack’s abilities. We are sad to see him go. We are sorry we won’t be able to make the funeral as we are out of town, but we will be thinking of him.
    Our condolences to the family.

  7. To Gary, Sharlene, Caylee and Ryan,

We were saddened to read of the passing of your father and grandfather. We remember him so well Caylee, for the many times he came to your basketball games over the years. He was always a bright smiling face and had a warm smile and handshake. He was always so friendly and personable whenever we had a chance to talk. He seemed like a wonderful man and a very positive influence on those around him. I am sure that he will be deeply missed in your family. Losing a parent is always such a break with your roots and your past and one of the great challenges in the cycle of life.
We wish you God’s peace and comfort at this difficult time. Warmest Regards.

    The Tolley Family

  8. Over the years I’ve worked on and off with Jack on many Stampede projects. He was one of the most gracious men I have had the pleasure to deal with – always a smile, a kind word…even when I goofed up… a bright spot in the day when he came by the shop. He will be missed by many, I’m so glad I knew him.

  9. Glenna Vanderlinden :

Dear Stewart family – I am very saddened to read about Jack’s passing. First of all, I was also born in Tuberose (nee: Hesla) and actually my late sister Irene’s husband Gordon Turner was Jack’s cousin! I also had the pleasure of doing business with Jack, because I was in the advertsing business as well for over 30 years, with Western Living magazine and Pattison Outdoor. And every time I drove through Canmore we wondered how he was doing! Jack was a gentleman, always friendly and accomodating and very respected in our industry.
My husband and I send you our sincere condolences and our thoughts are with you.
Warmest regards, Glenna and Peter Vanderlinden.

    To Jack’s family
Our sincere sympathy on Jack’s passing. We remember him with fondness at our Stewart Reunion. My mother-in-law is a cousin. Her mother and Jack’s father were brother and sister. We keep up on the family through Muriel. Just want you to know your Kyle Sk cousins are thinking of you.
