STEVENSON, Jean (nee MacLean)

February 16, 1928 – July 14, 2012

With profound sorrow, the family announces the passing of Jean Stevenson at 84 years of age.

Jean was born in Bassano, Alberta and moved to Calgary in 1946 where she worked at the Hudson’s Bay Company, and met her future husband Al. They married in Bassano on October 2, 1949 and moved to their house in Parkdale shortly thereafter, where they continued to live for the rest of their lives. Their children, Bruce and Sherri, were born in 1955 and 1959 and Jean stayed at home to raise them and manage the household. They all had many fond memories of summer vacations in Spokane, WA, Priest Lake, ID and holiday celebrations with Al’s family throughout Alberta.

When Al died suddenly in March of 1972, Jean had to support the family and raise her children, and we all know what a wonderful job she did! She began working at TransCanada PipeLines/Western Gas Marketing later that year, where she was employed in records management until her retirement in 1993.

Jean loved to travel, visiting Europe, USA and the Orient; and when her children moved away from Calgary, she made numerous trips to visit them in Houston, Brazil and Suriname. Jean welcomed short term and long term visitors into her home: nieces, nephews, in-laws and family. Her interests were diverse; she was an accomplished seamstress, a fabulous pie maker, created beautiful ceramics and practiced Tai Chi at West Hillhurst Community Association. She taught us about dedication to family and the importance of working hard, living within our means, and enjoying life.

Jean will be greatly missed by her son Bruce (Cathy); daughter Sherri (David), all of The Woodlands, TX; her four beloved grandchildren, Heidi, Paula, Brady, and Ellen; and her step-grandchildren, Brandi and Shawn. Jean is also survived by her sisters, Norma Schaffner of Spokane, WA and Lillian (Babe) Webb of Calgary; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Brown of High River, Phyl Musgrove of Edmonton and Iona MacLean of Bassano; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jean was predeceased by her husband Al in 1972; her father William in 1977; and her mother Lillian in 1962.

A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at Parkdale United Church (2919 – 8th Avenue N.W.) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Graveside Service will be held prior to the Celebration of Life at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Jean’s honour may be made directly to research on emphysema at http://www.copdcanada.ca/donate.htm

In living memory of Jean Stevenson, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.
