STENSON, William Arthur McCracken (Mac)

January 17, 1926 – June 5, 2012

William Arthur McCracken (Mac) Stenson of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the age of 86 years.

He was “Our Billy” to family and friends in England where he lived prior to immigrating to Canada in 1963. Bill to those he met on his travels while working as a Professional Engineer for Rolls Royce and Pratt & Whitney. He was simply Dad, Mac or “Grandpa Mac” to those of us who will miss him the most.

Dad had a way of negotiating through the world that was unique. He was a true character, a lover of life, who never lost his curiosity, sense of adventure or his desire for continuous learning.

He was a loving husband to Mavis (predeceased) his wife of forty-seven years. He was a much loved Dad to Michael (Monique), Trevor (Janet) and Trish (Joanne). He was a proud grandfather to Kirstie (Rob), Matthew (Jaime), Meeca and Rowan. “Grandpa” Mac to his great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ben, Maddie, Aly and soon to arrive “baby bump”. He was brother to Marjorie and Uncle Billy to Colin and Hilary.

Mac had seventeen wonderful years with partner and companion Margaret McCartney. He was a much loved fixture in the lives of Margaret’s children, Candy (Wendell) and Jan (Ken). He was a much loved surrogate grandparent to their children, Andrew (Erin), Gillian, Graham, Diane and Nancy (Chris).

All who had the privilege of knowing him will miss his dry sense of humour and bad jokes. Mac lived a rich life. We can see him dancing and reciting “Albert and the Lion” as he moves into his next great adventure.

We love you, Mac. You will be missed. Thank you for being such an amazing part of lives.

Memorial Services to be held at later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Mac’s honour may be made directly to the Santuari Hospice (c/o Calgary Health Trust, Suite 800, 11012 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary, AB, T2J 6A5).

In living memory of Mac Stenson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.

  4. Please accept our deepest sympathy on your loss from all of us at the Rolls-Royce Retirees Association of North America. I for one came to know Mac through periodic email communications in which I learned of his activities in pioneering jet powered flight while at Rolls-Royce and of his valiant fight to defeat the doctor’s prognosis and maintain his quality of life.

  5. Henry Peare :

Macs was a good friend that I met when I was sent to RRC in Montreal, in 1966. Over the years that I was in Montreal we were friends both at work and outside of work. We had many a visit with him and Mavis, and we had contacts at times after I went to the Vancouver area. I have had contact with him since I returned to the UK, not very often unfortunately. I extend my sympathy to his present wife and to his family. Sincerely Henry Peare
