STEINER, Otto

November 19, 1927 – December 12, 2011

Otto Steiner beloved husband of Claudia Steiner of Calgary, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2011 at the age of 84 years.

Otto Steiner was born November 19, 1927 in Rieden, Switzerland. He immigrated by boat and train to Canada April 30, 1958. His wife Claudia and children Reto and Angela followed in November of the same year. Calgary became home for the family. He came to Canada with $500.00 and spoke no English. He dug up all the strawberries, which he thought were weeds, as a result the job only lasted a day. Otto started his own company Superior Components, a cabinet making business. Atco bought Superior, and Otto became a part of the Atco family. He retired from Atco and then went on to build Woodside Golf Course in Airdrie, AB which opened in 1989.

Golfing and skiing were Otto’s passion. Heli skiing at 80 with his son Reto, and three hole in ones were highlights of his life. He was always early and never late. Otto and Claudia went to Hawaii every Christmas Holiday, and never missed a day of golf. He did a lot of wood carvings and woodwork right up until 2 months ago, he never quit using his hands. Otto loved a good wager, and was always happy to win a dollar. He taught his children that anything is possible and lived by that motto.

Otto is survived by his wife Claudia and children Reto (Julie) and Angela (Mike); grandson Brodie and granddaughter Jesse. He is also survived by his niece Irma (Franz); and great niece Nancy (Jason); great great nephews Eli and Owen. Otto is also survived numerous relatives in Switzerland.

A Celebration of Otto’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8, Telephone: (403) 955-8818.

In living memory of Otto Steiner, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

Condolence Messages

  1. I am saddened to read of Otto’s passing. As a former Mayor and Alderman for the City of Airdrie I can attest to the huge impact that the Woodside Golf Course has had on our community. Besides being the local high quality course that it is, it has become the centre focal point of so many community events and activities. Without the vision and care given to the development and maintainance of Woodside Golf Course by Otto and his team, Airdrie would have been poorer for Otto’s absence.

    Sincerely,
    Linda Bruce

    Claudia & Family:

Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time. We will look back on the many golf games with Otto and recall his strategies of his game: Driver, fairway wood, chip, putt and what always seemed like a Par. He was a kind and gentle man who made those around him laugh. May all the wonderful memories give you strength in the days to come.

  7. Norm Robertson and Dale Richardson :

    Claudia and Family
Dale and I are sorry we couldn’t be with you and your family today to celebrate Ottos life. For sure it was a life filled with adventure, athletic success, business success beyond his dreams and of course family commitment to his wife and his children who were his pride and joy. Claudia, you and he spending 56 years of marriage together is a testament to the values both you and he had with regard to the family institution. How I will miss those memorable golf games and the 19th hole conversations (and the settling of the wagers).
We are coming to Calgary for a few days over Christmas and will call to see how you’re feeling as well as hopefully have an opportunity to speak with Reto and Angela.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all today.
    Dale and Norm
