STEIGER, Benjamin “Benny” Forrest

December 5, 1997 – April 5, 2014

Benjamin “Benny” Forrest Steiger of Calgary and Turner Valley passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the age of 16 years.

Ben attended St. Williams Elementary and Willow Park School in Calgary and was in grade 10 at Oilfields High School. He worked at the Highwood Auction Market. Ben will be most remembered for his fun-loving spirit. He touched many lives in his short time with us. Benny enjoyed many activities like playing his acoustic guitar, writing and singing songs, skateboarding, dirt biking and water sports at the family cabin, hunting, basketball and loved hanging out with his friends. He would always inform those close to him to “Lighten Up Francis!” He had a deep passion for the rodeo life and bronco riding. Benny was one of a kind, he had lots of “try and not much quit”. Ben was very sensitive to the needs of others and always had your back. He will be dearly missed.

Ben is survived by his mother Kathy Groenen and Robert Groenen of Calgary; father Wayne Steiger of Turner Valley; brothers Chalmer Steiger (Val) and Chase Steiger (Rachel); grandparents Les and Betty Sardi; aunts and uncles, Les Sardi (Monica), BJ Schlenker (Karl), Terry Piercy (Brent), Brian Steiger (Joyce), Miles Steiger (Debbie), Lynn Hoffman (Len), Bev Carson (Terry), Jaynellen Richardson (Brent), Norma Fellgate (Bill); niece Cayla Steiger; cousins, Tatiana, Wyatt, Kate, Korrie, Kimmy, Kristina, Bence, Gregory, Brent, Mark, Kevin, Robin, Penny, Tannis, Scott, Sarah, Andrew, Nicholas, Nathan, Sean, Jonathan, Rebecca, Jason, Carley, Hailey and Lacey; and step-brothers John (Serena) and Marshall Groenen.
He was predeceased by his grandparents Art and Avis Steiger and great-grandmother Grams.

A Celebration of Ben’s Life will be held at First Alliance Church (12345 – 40th Street S.E.) on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Donations can be made to Ben Steiger Scholarship Memorial Fund at any ATB Branch care of Shield-Ben Steiger.

I will ride with him one day… no fences or boundaries… He will challenge me to be young once again… And I will take that challenge with honor in a heart beat… Knowing full well that I already had the opportunity to experience a life that he never had… The opportunity to love a woman or father a child or simply be a man… ‘Though he was a man… Maybe even much more than I am… He was a good young man of 16 years old… Never saw such a smile as he wore.. Always…

I loved Ben a lot, and we watched him grow over the years into a very fine young man. Our deepest sincere condolences to Kathy and Robert, there can be no more tragic thing happen than to have your child pass on before you do, and I pray for strength and courage for all of your families in the coming months, as the protective shock wears off and the reality of life without this kind gentle young man sets in; that you will have love & support from friends who love you and will be there for you to lean on when you need to.
