STEEVES, Sylvia (nee Durant)

February 9, 1916 – February 21, 2013

Sylvia Steeves, beloved wife of sixty-eight years of Al Steeves, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the age of 97 years.

Sylvia was born in Calgary and grew up near Delacour. She went to public school on Highway 9 east of Calgary and high school at St. Mary’s Convent in Calgary. Sylvia went to Normal School (SAIT) for her certificate in Teaching. Her father and family transferred to Lloydminster where she taught school in Edgerton, AB for four years then in High River until her marriage to Al in 1944. They moved to Edmonton in 1951, Ottawa in 1960 and returned to Calgary in 1968. Sylvia took up golf and joined Inglewood Golf and Curling Club in 1970 and was a member until 2006 and was also a member of Parkdale Community for many years. She volunteered at YWCA where she taught English to new Canadians for fifteen years. Sylvia will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Sylvia is survived by son Terry Steeves (Cathy Brown); daughter and son-in-law Meryl and Wayne Giles; and five grandchildren, Jeremy Steeves, Chris Steeves, Ben Giles, Pat Giles and Emily Giles; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Selwyn and Berthe Durant; her brother Francis Durant; two sister-in-laws Jean Steeves and Phyllis Malcolm and brother-in-law George Malcolm.

A celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. A special thank you to all the staff at Hillcrest Extendicare for their kindness and loving care shown to Sylvia the past three years.
