STEEVES, Gordon B.

December 19, 1932 – March 20, 2013

Gord passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with non Hodgkin Lymphoma on Wednesday March 20, 2013.

Gord was born in High River and raised in Calgary after the premature passing of his father in 1941. He remains friends with his classmates from Western Canada High School. He graduated with a BSc from University of Alberta on a hockey scholarship in 1956, followed by a BEd from the University of Calgary in 1964.
He developed his love for the outdoors in his first career as a geologist, before serving as a teacher with the CBE and DND in Germany. He then returned to the oil patch with Pan Canadian, PetroCanada, finishing his career with CAPP.

Though he travelled extensively, he always returned to hike and ski in his beloved Rocky Mountains. Gord was an all-round athlete, and avid tennis player, but thought he might take up lapidary when he got old.

He is survived and sadly missed by his children: Glenn (Christine), Wanda (Robert), Darryl (Pam), Alison (Kyle), and close confidants Marion and Elsie. He is also remembered by a large circle of wonderful friends and neighbors, as he always believed “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold“.

Friends and family are invited to share in a celebration of his life at the Calgary Winter Club (4611 14th St. N.W.) Calgary, AB on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com

In living memory of Gordon Steeves, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  10. Don, Janet, David, Matt and Tim Rypien :

It was with deep sadness that we learned of Gord’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. My family has had many wonderful memories with Gord. He was my first supervisor when I was hired by Petro-Canada in 1984 and he became a friend for life. His visits to St. John’s when he was with Petro-Canada and later on when he was retired were always enjoyable. My three sons always enjoyed visiting with Gord. In 2008 the whole family came to Calgary and we enjoyed Gord’s hospitality at Stampede time and his joining us on a visit to the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller. Over the years, I’ve had many trips to Calagry and have always enjoyed meeting with Gord for lunch or supper to catch up on what has happened since the last time we met. In a twist of fate, when my sister Lois lived in High Level she became friends with Gord’s daughter Wanda and they discoverd that Gord and I had worked together. Our sympathy to his family, he will be missed.

  13. Ken and I will surely miss Gordon’s upbeat Christmas letters, the recent one so full his usual joie-de vivre and happy anticipation of the reunion with Wanda and her family (in spite of his failing health). As a friend and former colleague I have many memories of Gordon’s great sense of humour, hospitality and generosity. I count myself fortunate to be one of the many people whose life he has touched and I join them in mourning his passing and extending my sympathy to Elsie and Wanda especially. His friendship really was “silver and gold”.

We were sorry to hear the very sad news of Gord’s passing. We first met him in the early 1980’s when I was working in Petro-Canada’s Halifax office. Whenever we got together over the years the evenings were filled with laughter and some great stories. We also shared a love of the outdoors and a love of travel. He was always interesting and more importantly, he was always interested. I suspect that is why we will all miss him so much.

  21. Jacqueline Rich :

Gordon was a dear and loyal friend from U of A, who kept in touch with me regularly although I am now living in Victoria. We shared a “non-religious” perspective, and I think this openness and inclusiveness drew folks to him.
I miss him; he was such a good, kind and grounded person – and a great dancer! Memories of him will live on in all of us who knew him. Sympathies to his family.
