STEEDMAN – Shirley Marjorie (nee Shields)

January 29, 1931 – December 24, 2010

Shirley Steedman, born January 29, 1931 passed away suddenly on December 24, 2010 at the Rockyview Hospital. Shirley follows her husband, Bud Steedman, of Spences and Roberts Shoes.

Shirley, an active Calgary volunteer, was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of South Calgary  for her outstanding yearly work on their Stampede Dream Home project. As a former patient of the Calgary Cardiac Wellness Institute, Shirley gave back to her community and became a valued volunteer there for many years. She also organized the sale of daffodils for the Cancer Society at the Scotia Centre for which she received a Certificate of Merit. Her other work included the organization of the Wonderland of Light for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Shirley’s pet project was the Calgary Ballet Company.  She generously supported many charitable organizations financially, and could always be found knitting or cooking for those in need. Her claim to fame was as a baker of Nanaimo bars and she never arrived anywhere without a sample of these treats.  Her family held an early 80th surprise birthday party for her in December of this year that was a wonderful gathering for her energetic personality. Her late son Jim and husband Bud will welcome her home. She will be missed by many.

She will be sorely missed by her three children daughter Jo-Ann and partner Mike; daughter Karen and husband Stephen; son Don and partner Helen; seven grandchildren, Peer and Fynn; Kelsey, Zak and Alex; Jordan and Adan; five great-grandchildren, Quinn, Cate, Bethany, McKenzie and Isabella; her sister Joyce Campbell and Husband Bob of Kelowna and their family.

  3. Cleveland Bob & Debi :

We are so saddened by Shirley’s passing. I know Bud is glad to have her back with him.
We have so many fond and fun memories of her from our times together in Maui.
It was always the best times at her famous or is it infamous Super Bowl parties, the pupu parties by the pool, or the surprise birthday parties for Steve. Her renditions of Canada’s national anthem after a few drinks was an expected treat.
Shirley had the biggest heart and welcomed us into the Kahana family when we first came to Maui in 2001, and we looked forward to seeing her each year and getting updates on her life and family. It just won’t be the same without her there this year.
Our thoughts are with you at this sad time and know that in time, the memories you have will ease the pain.

We were saddened to hear that Shirley passed away. She was very special to me and my children. Always giving us a little something at Christmas. We also have fond memories of visiting in Hawaii. I also remember growing up, and going to Shirleys for Saturday morning tea with all the ladies and sitting there watching everybody knitting. She will be missed.
