STAWN, George Stanley

October 11, 1941 – December 15, 2012

George, of Cochrane, passed away at home following a long illness on December 15, 2012 at the age of 71 years.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, George is survived by his devoted wife Kathy (nee Cook); his children Nigel (Laurense), Belinda Jane Gilman, Anastasia (Rob) Barrett, Aleshia Stawn, Lisa (Brad) Park, James (Amy) and Alex; 6 grandchildren and beloved dogs.

Predeceased by his parents, George was the only child of Eugene and Dorothy Stawn, with whom he immigrated to Canada from Russia in 1948. Known as “The Prof”, George began his teaching career at Waterloo, and was recruited by Mount Royal College before the campus was moved from a few buildings in downtown Calgary to it’s currant home in Lincoln Park. He enjoyed 30 illustrious years at MRC before retiring. George was a man of eclectic tastes, from raising and training dogs to enjoying authentic Dim Sum in Chinatown, to traveling to Costa Rica with Kathy, to watching professional boxing matches. He had a great love of criminology and sociology, and helped his thousands of students learn to love those subjects, too. George also had a gift for making friends wherever he went, people from all walks of life were drawn to him, and nobody ever forgot him once meeting him.

  5. Mabel Bregman Marshall :

I was so sorry to hear of my cousin’s passing. I have been looking to locate George for a long time and came across this obituary a few months ago. George’s Mom was my Dads cousin. I have a great photo to share with you of George and me and our parents taken around 1952. Please accept my deepest condolences. I would love to hear from you and your kids. Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Eugene were great people, as was George. I remember going to Aunt Dorothy’s dress store as a child. She was so glamorous! My dad, Fred, was very fond of her. She was my dad’s only living relative in Canada.
