SMITH, Wilma Marie

January 22, 1924 – August 20, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Wilma Smith (nee Hall) of Calgary, formerly of Toronto, on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the age of 87 years, after a brief illness.

Wilma was the beloved wife and best friend of Kenneth Smith, loving mother of John (Bonnie) of Toronto, Margaret (Jim) of Calgary, cherished grandmother of James Bell (Cynthia) of Calgary, Emily Bell (Burke) of Calgary, and Laura Smith of Toronto, and proud great-grandmother of Lucian. She is also the beloved sister of Glenda Chalmers and Margaret Clemmens, both of Toronto. Wilma was predeceased by her parents Wilman and Marie Hall and her baby brother John Wesley.

Wilma was a wonderful homemaker, wife and mother. She was always active in volunteer work through the United Church. Wilma was an avid reader, loved to write and wrote several essays on her recollections of childhood and life, as a treasured anthology. She was a lifelong learner and took many literature courses at the University of Toronto. Wilma was very creative. She loved music, played the piano and organ, painted, and crafted homemade dolls. Wilma also belonged to several book clubs over the years and enjoyed discussing books and writing book reports. Wilma and Ken were able to travel extensively upon Ken’s retirement. Wilma was especially in love with Britain and made several trips to London, England with Ken. Wilma and Ken moved to Calgary in 1999, enjoying an active life in a senior’s community. They later moved to an assisted living residence in Arbour Lake in Northwest Calgary. After Ken’s death Wilma continued to live at Arbour Lake and in 2009 moved to Bethany Care Centre. Wilma had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Friday August 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held in Toronto at a later date. You may forward condolences through

  9. Rita Popowich :

Wilma’s obituary was a lovely tribute to an interesting woman. I met Wilma at a book club. What a voracious reader. Wilma would have read all the recent bestsellers but also did a superb job of introducing and encouraging the members to read the classics. There was never a ‘good’ book that Wilma had not read. Wilma became our reference guide on what to read next. My deepest condolences to Margaret and her extended family.

My sincere sympathy in the death of Wilma. I am a member of Islington United church and remember both Ken and Wilma fondly- very fine people- always with smiles and sincere greetings. They are still missed at IUC, but I know they are in a far better place now. Praise God.

    Dear Margaret & family,

I was so sad to hear the news that your lovely Mom Wilma had passed away, I did see her for a short visit last December when I stopped by the Bethany care Centre one day , we shared a kiss & hug.
I enjoyed my visits with her so much when she lived at Arbor lake , we talked about England and drank cups of tea together.
We shared a mutual love for reading , & clothes ! I rearranged her closets for her and we laughed together often.

She was an absolute darling of a lady .
    My condolences to you all.

    With fondest memories, Rosie.

Wilma was a loving and gracious lady. We had inspiring conversations about life and relationships while drinking many cups of tea. Now she is free from the restrictions of the human body, away on another journey. We shall meet again.
