SMITH, Michael Haydn

March 13, 1940 – May 8, 2012

Mike, beloved husband of Kathy, passed away in Calgary on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the age of 72 years.

Mike was born in the great seaport of Liverpool, he was baptised into Anglian Church Communion in 1941 and attended Christ’s Hospital School as a scholar of the Royal Mathematical School. Mike spent two years with the Territorial Army as Cadet Sergeant, East Surrey Regiment and Technical Assistant with the Royal Artillery. Later, Mike lived in Germany for six months to learn the language. He then studied at Reading University, graduating with a BSc (General) Geology, Zoology and Botany and later a BSc (Special) Geology. In 1965 he immigrated to Canada and worked for several oil exploration companies as a Professional Geologist. Exploration projects have taken him to the US, Europe and relocated his family to Australia for five years. He was a Life Member of APEGGA. Mike married Kathleen Fox in 1969.

Mike joined the Rotary club in 1983 as a member of the East Perth Club of Western Australia. In 1991 he joined Calgary Centennial and was club president 1998 – 1999 and was Governor of RI District 5360, 2003 – 2004. Mike was a Paul Harris Fellow and a sustaining Member of The Rotary Foundation. He recently was a recipient of the RI Service Above Self award. Mike loved sea kayaking on the west side of Vancouver Island, in the Queen Charlotte Islands and in Mexico. He also enjoyed hiking and cross country skiing in the mountains, and visiting family and friends in different parts of the world.

Besides his loving wife Kathy, Mike will be dearly missed by his children, Craig (Venus), Stephen (Anna) and Carolyn, grandchildren Katie, Lukas, Amber and Seth.

He was predeceased by his father Eric Haydn Smith in 1941 and his mother Varela Peggy Peace Smith (nee Davis) in 2006.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.     Dear Kathy and Family, Our sincerest condolences with Mike’s passing, we loved him very much. Much of what I am doing in Rotary today is a direct result of his influence on me, he was my Rotary Mentor and for that Corrie and I will always be greatful.   5. How lucky are we to have you as friends and inspirations Mike & Kathy! I will never forget Mike’s vision as a leader of Rotarians…his desire to throw a party like no other. Recounting recently at The Foothills, how the Rotarians danced and celebrated all night long,outlasting the Youth Exchange students at his District Governor’s Ball! =) A cherished memory.
