Elizabeth (Betty) was born on May 4, 1923, in Collingwood, Ontario. Betty was a third generation Canadian whose ancestors came from Stirling, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. She lived most of her early life in Brampton, Ontario and graduated as a dental nurse from the University of Toronto in 1944. She married Charles Ferguson Smith on September 20, 1947. Charles was a son of CB Smith, a long time resident of Creemore, and a four generation Canadian. The couple initially resided in Toronto while Charles completed his studies as a Mining Engineer at the University of Toronto. The Smiths then moved west to Kimberley, British Columbia where their first two children were born, Stephen and David. The family moved on to Trail, British Columbia in 1954 where their third son, Peter was born, and to Eldorado, Saskatchewan in 1957 where their daughter Janet was born. They subsequently lived in Edmonton, Ottawa, and Calgary where Charles passed away in 1982. Betty lived on her own for the past 35 years and did an excellent job managing her own affairs and in looking after herself. During these years she facilitated three weddings, three moves, and numerous trips and cruises including visiting Europe, the Caribbean, China and Fiji. Her greatest joy was making a loving home for her family and participating in family celebrations and get-togethers. She enjoyed reading, collecting books, completing the daily crossword puzzle, and playing bridge. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her and fondly remembered for her unique wit and sense of humour.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers at the Southwood Hospice, Foothills Hospital, and Staywell Manor for the love and respect they gave to Elizabeth during her time there.

At Elizabeth’s request there will be no formal service. A Private Family Gathering will be held in Creemore, ON on Saturday, September 30, 2017. Interment will be held at the Creemore Union Cemetery in Ontario.

I remember when Aunt Betty brought us the game “Simon” when we were young kids (which included my 2 brothers and my sister). We played that game every day until 2 o’clock in the morning! Thanks, Aunt Betty. You always spoiled us like crazy and we always felt terrible when it was time to say goodbye! You were an amazing lady with a wonderful, loving family. Our deepest condolences on your passing. Susan (Gruber) Langley and the Gruber Family
