SMITH, Derek Arthur

August 18, 1941 –  November 21, 2013

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Derek at the young age of 72.  Derek was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Stephen and Margaret Smith.  He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1964 with a Bachelor of Commerce.  After graduating, he and his young family moved to Calgary where he commenced training as a Chartered Accountant.  Derek was, in 1973, the founding partner of Smith Matthews and Partners which was merged into Touche Ross and Partners in 1986.  Derek was a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta.  He was actively involved with Chartered Accountant training and examinations throughout his career.  He served as national chairman of the Institutes Board of Examiners from 1988 to 1990.  He also served as a member of the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants governing council from 1992 to 1998.  He was a member of the Certified Management Consultants Association of Alberta and was a member of the board of that Association from 1987 to 1989.  Derek was also a member of the Certified Fraud Examiners Association, a US – based forensic investigation group.  Volunteering was an important part of his life, and he started young as the manager of the U of S football team.  Later, he coached his daughters’ sport teams. He was President of Springbank Park for all Seasons, Treasurer for the planning committee for Westside Recreational Centre, Treasurer of the Unitarian Universalist Church, active member of the Luxton Foundation in Banff and Board member of Fairway Estates, Sylvan Lake.   He was a proud member of the Ranchman’s Club as well as the Liberal Party.  In 2004 he was the Liberal candidate for the Provincial Riding of Calgary West.  Derek will be remembered for his sense of humour, his wonderful laugh and empathy for others.  Derek was predeceased by his second wife, Jane, brother Harvey and his parents.  Left to mourn are daughters Corrina (Glenn McClement),  Cicely (Rob Brown),   Johanna (Jay Crocker);  son Aaron;  grandchildren Cameron and Daniel McClement, Samantha and Rebecca Brown, Theo and Della Crocker; beloved partner Karyn Stinson;  sister Marguerite (Peter Neelands); first wife Barb Smith.

    Derek and Jane flew all the way to Dubai to our wedding back in 2007, a 24 hr+ journey. It was so magnificent to see them and I remember them having a great time in the middle east, particularly at the gold markets! On behalf of dee, stuart and our sons alasdair and roan we pass on our sincerest condolences to Derek’s family for a life well led and of Derek’s service to society whom many, many people benefited from.
