March 12, 2015 – Calgary, AB
Annetta “Sally” Smith passed away at Bow View Manor on Thursday March 12, 2015 at the ripe young age of 95 years.
Sally spent most of her life in Claresholm, Alberta before moving to Calgary to be closer to her daughter as the passing years required her to seek more care and personal attention. The youngest of 12 siblings she soon developed a keen sense of independence and survival. She worked for many years as a skilled artisan for Safeway Shelters at Claresholm airport and earned the Employee of the Year award. She was known at the Drop-In Centre as a very competitive card player and could have won the best dressed award as well. She liked fine clothes. That competitive edge carried over to other activities. She competed in the Alberta Senior Summer Games as a member of a medal winning shuffleboard team from Claresholm. She also worked during her off hours at the famous Flying N restaurant at the airport owned by Jean Hoare. One of her recipes appeared in Jean Hoare’s Best Little Cookbook In The West.
Although suffering from severe dementia in her later years she never lost her sense of humour and quick wit and never missed an opportunity to tease a staff member. Her years at Bow View were made more comfortable and enjoyable due greatly to the professionalism and dedication of the nursing and recreation staff. Special kudos to all the outstanding individuals working in the Crowfoot Unit. You made Sally’s stay in your unit a work of love and brought her immeasurable joy and comfort and helped her maintain a deep sense of dignity.
Sally was predeceased by her husband Ira, her daughter Linda (Dugal) and son Lyle. She is survived by her son Lynn and two grandchildren as well as son-in-law Luc Dugal.
