SMITH, Annetta Paulina “Sally”

September 29, 1919 – New Leipzig, North Dakota
March 12, 2015 – Calgary, AB

Annetta “Sally” Smith passed away at Bow View Manor on Thursday March 12, 2015 at the ripe young age of 95 years.

Sally spent most of her life in Claresholm, Alberta before moving to Calgary to be closer to her daughter as the passing years required her to seek more care and personal attention. The youngest of 12 siblings she soon developed a keen sense of independence and survival. She worked for many years as a skilled artisan for Safeway Shelters at Claresholm airport and earned the Employee of the Year award. She was known at the Drop-In Centre as a very competitive card player and could have won the best dressed award as well. She liked fine clothes. That competitive edge carried over to other activities. She competed in the Alberta Senior Summer Games as a member of a medal winning shuffleboard team from Claresholm. She also worked during her off hours at the famous Flying N restaurant at the airport owned by Jean Hoare. One of her recipes appeared in Jean Hoare’s Best Little Cookbook In The West.

Although suffering from severe dementia in her later years she never lost her sense of humour and quick wit and never missed an opportunity to tease a staff member. Her years at Bow View were made more comfortable and enjoyable due greatly to the professionalism and dedication of the nursing and recreation staff. Special kudos to all the outstanding individuals working in the Crowfoot Unit. You made Sally’s stay in your unit a work of love and brought her immeasurable joy and comfort and helped her maintain a deep sense of dignity.

Sally was predeceased by her husband Ira, her daughter Linda (Dugal) and son Lyle. She is survived by her son Lynn and two grandchildren as well as son-in-law Luc Dugal.

As per Sally’s wishes No Services will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to Bow View Manor – Crowfoot Entertainment Fund, 4628 Montgomery Blvd. S.W., Calgary, AB T3B0K7 Telephone:403-288-4446.

In living memory of Sally Smith, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.

Condolence Messages

  1. Audrey M. Nelson :

Dear Lynn, We were looking for news of Aunt Neta and Wendy found this obituary this morning. We were saddened to hear of her passing but understand her life was very hard the last few years. We had not heard of Linda’s death and were shocked and heartsick over that loss. Wendy and I fondly remember times as your farm outside Claresholm riding in the old farm truck, gathering eggs and visiting Grandma Smith in her happy home. We’d love to have some contact with you as I am trying to update the Hintz Book mom (Freda Redford) put together in 1985. We hope to hear from you.
With Loving Thoughts, Your Cousin, Audrey Redford Nelson
