SMITH, Alice Marie

September 5, 1912 – February 21, 2013

Beloved wife of the late Arthur Smith (1978) and daughter of the late Walter & Pearl Seeley of Dauphin, Manitoba. Alice is lovingly remembered by her son Rick (Paulette); daughter Penny (Wayne); grandsons Bryan (Christine) Smith and Kevin (Darla) Smith; her brothers Fred and Glen Seeley; her sisters Irene Mayhew and Dolores Winship and sister-in-law Rose Seeley. Alice is predeceased by her sisters Minnie, Margaret, Ruby and Toots and three brothers, Edward, Samuel and Frank.

Alice and Arthur were both born in Dauphin, Manitoba and married in 1938 in Winnipeg. They moved to Saskatoon in 1955, and then to Calgary in 1962. Always fashionable Alice worked at Ted McGregor’s (an iconic British Woolen Women’s Clothing Shop), and The Bay, retiring in her early 60’s. Alice and Art loved to travel and had many great adventures. Art’s early passing in 1978 left Alice without her beloved partner; however her devotion to her family, especially her young grandsons brought her much happiness. Alice enjoyed many activities including golf, curling, playing bridge, discussing politics and sports, hiking and volunteering at the Foothills Hospital (well into her 80’s). She also continued to travel with her daughter who was a flight attendant with United Airlines. She was an active member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, The Women’s Canadian Club, and the Calgary Opera. Alice lived independently well into her late 90’s celebrating her 90th with a road trip back to Dauphin to visit family and friends. Alice will be remembered dearly for her love of life, independent spirit, generous heart and beautiful smile.

Alice spent the last 2 1/2 years at the Chinook Care Centre (Belaire Unit & Richard’s Way) and the family would like to thank all the staff for their personal care and kindness.

A private family memorial will be held at a future date. If friends so desire, donations in her memory may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (100, 119 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 1Z6). Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Alice Smith, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

May the “hearer of prayer” give you peace. (Psalms 31:24)

  2. We would like to extend our condolences on the passing of Alice. Alice shared a room at Chinook Care Centre with our mom/mother-in-law/grandmother Barbara before her passing in December. Alice and her family were always so friendly to Mom and always included her in their visits. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

  5. Penny and Rick,
I was saddened to hear of your Mothers passing. Although memories of her Uncle Art and you two are very distant what I do recall, is with great fondness. Our families Sunday visits are some of my earliest memories. Please know I care.
