SMALLWOOD, Edna Olivia (nee Ellingson)

November 13, 1941 – September 13, 2012

Edna Olivia Smallwood beloved wife of Vaughan of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the age of 70 years.

Edna was born in Shaunavon, SK on November 13, 1941 to Ilor and Annie Ellingson. She completed high school in 1959 and worked at the post office until she moved to Regina prior to her marriage to Vaughan Smallwood of Moose Jaw. Over their more than fifty-one years of married life, Edna and Vaughan lived in many Canadian cities and vacationed in numerous U.S. cities and states as well as Mexico. Edna loved books and was passionate about learning. Her favourite job was working in the Calgary Public Library for some fifteen years where she developed her skills as a researcher. After she retired from the library, Edna started genealogical research on her two families and spent many days researching in the LDS library in Salt Lake City. She loved to travel and visit new and different places. However, when she was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in April 2007, and subsequently moved to a long-term care facility, she was unable to continue any of these activities. The following was written by her twelve year old granddaughter Erica in a facebook message and sums up all of our feelings: “My heart is broken. I love you Grandma miss you so much. Have a nice trip. Please be my guardian angel and watch over me from above.”

Besides her loving husband Vaughan, Edna is survived by son George Smallwood; daughter Kirsten Whitwell (Jason); sister Colleen Ellingson; and granddaughters Erica Smallwood and Hayley Whitwell.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  5. To Kirsten and Family,

My heartfelt condolences to all of you at this difficult time. I have some wonderful memories of Edna.Through the younger years it was always a hoot to go over to Kirstens house.
Edna always welcomed us with her infectious smile and bubbly personality. Yes we can all say she was a bit nutty at times! Remember the fruit skirts Kirsten just loved those!! It was cute how she loved her cats!
I would often enjoy a visit from Edna to the salon and she would have her “Barb Higgins” picture in hand ready to go. Really enjoyed talking about the good old days with her.
I’m so glad I got to see her for a few visits at the nursing home to do her hair. I won’t ever forget the welcoming smile she gave us. I would often catch your Dad looking at your mom with a twinkle in his eye and you could see the love he had for her. It was so heart warming. He took such good care of her and for that I am so grateful.

Rest in peace Edna, fly with angels

    Love Leslie and Family

  8. Georgia (Straub) Jacques :

    To Edna’s family,
My deepest sympathy. Edna & I both attended Shaunavon High School though we were about three years apart. But we “starred” in a play together in the Shaunavon High School Drama Club. Many years later, we met again as we were both employed by the Calgary Public Library. I retired before Edna and lost track of her. When the library held it’s 100th anniversary staff homecoming this past June, Edna was one of the people I hoped to see. Now I understand why she was not there. I am so sorry.
