SLADEK, Donald (Don) Neil James

November 4, 1937 – June 8, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was taken from us at the age of 74 years due to complications from pneumonia and heart disease.

Don was born in Rosedale, AB to parents RoseAnne Harvey (Milk River, AB) and Anton Sladek (Prague, Czechoslovakia). He attended school in Drumheller until he joined the RCAF in 1951. With his extensive travel across the country with “2 Construction Maintenance Unit based in Calgary”, he met his wife in Ottawa. In 1960 he was sent to 2 Wing RCAF Station, Grostenquin, France where they were married and resided for four years. They were repatriated in 1964 and sent to Edmonton where they raised their family until their move to Calgary in 1992.

Don is survived by his wife and soul-mate Denise of fifty years; three dearly loved sons; Marc (Cyndy) of Vancouver, BC. Don (Colleen) and Bob (Ellen) both of Calgary; one special daughter Lisa Marie of Calgary; beautiful grandchildren, Tasha, Donovan, Caitlyn, Jenna, Shelley and Shaeleen; his sister Audrey Loro; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

    Denise.
So sorry to hear about the loss of Don. I don’t know if you remember me or not, I worked for TC in Edmonton in Regulations Library, 9th floor. Always remember the chuckles we had. I never met your husband but if he was as nice a person as you he must have been a great person to know. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very sad time.

Denise, Marc, Don, Bob and Lisa: Please accept our sincere condolences during this difficult time. Don Sr. was a special person, and he will be greatly missed. He had a unique way of bringing a smile to your face. It didn’t matter if he was in a good mood or he was a bit grumpy, he still managed to make you feel comfortable to be around. He was a person of character and integrity. And yes, he certainly was a character. Whenever Marc or Don would have a couple friends come over to visit, Don Sr., would always welcome them by saying “Oh look, here comes Tweedledee and Tweedledum” And then with a knowing smirk, he would slowly turn and walk away. It was his way of saying, “Hi, good to see you again”. The welcome was expected, but left me with a feeling of confusion – I never really knew which one of us he was referring to – was I Tweedledee?

You always felt welcome at the Sladek’s house, or at their place at the lake. Denise, always the most gracious hostess, would offer you anything she had available, and Don, lurking in the distance, would offer up a comment in the background like “Don’t eat us out of house and home”. Smirking again he would turn and get back to his business. You knew he was happy to share.

I have nothing but the fondest of memories growing up and spending time around the Sladek household, and Don Sr. was the glue that made the Sladek house stick together. I feel honoured to have known him and have him as part of my formative years.

I’m sorry that I am not there in person to convey my sympathy to all, but please know that me and my family are saving a special part of our hearts for the memory of Don Sr.

With love, David Blumer (Lisa, Hannah and Rhys)

P.S. I’m pretty sure Tweedledum was Duane. I think Don Sr. would agree.
