SKRAPEC, Martha “Martie” Annie (nee Loucks)

May 30, 1923 – May 8, 2012

Martie passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Bow View Manor in Calgary, AB at the age of 88 years.

She was raised on the family homestead as early settlers of Hearst, ON. She was one of ten children born to John Richard Loucks (1889-1938) and Christina Alvira Davidson (1891-1950). Martie never completed her final year of high school in order to help raise the family after her father John passed away suddenly at the age of 49 years.

Martie was an integral part of the WWII effort as a gun assembler in the ammunition factories. She made a career of working retail and enjoyed great rapport with her many coworkers over the years. She was a very hard and dedicated worker, holding a multitude of jobs to support her family. Martie’s numerous hobbies and interests included gardening (taking particular pride in her participation in the community garden at the Golden Age Club), dancing, bowling, and skating. She was tireless at work and at play. Martie lived an extremely active and vital life. After retirement, she filled her social calendar with bingo, dance nights and local gatherings at the seniors’ club. Even while sitting on the couch, one could expect to find a crossword puzzle attached to her hand. She was most proud of all three of her children growing into “responsible and wonderful” adults, speaking highly of them up to her final days. Martie will be truly missed by the many lives she touched.

Martie is survived by her sister Audry Lubieniecki (Jerry) of Hamilton, ON and sister Shirley Loucks of ON, and sister-in-law Ruby Loucks of Okotoks, AB. Martie married Albert Skrapec and together raised three children, Barry (Lynn Keys) of Kelowna, BC, Candice of California, and Drew (Shannon Guyett) of Calgary, AB. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jamie (great-granddaughter Faith), Darren, Alice, and Heather all of Calgary, and greatly enjoyed the company of Alyssa and Gregory Wallace of Calgary, AB, Lyndsay Keys of Kelowna, BC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews throughout Canada.

She was predeceased by twin brothers Gordon and Clarke who died at birth, brother Harry in 1979, sister Kay in 1981, brother Richard in 1988, sister Betty in 2007, and sister Christina in 2009.

As per her request there will be no formal services. For those wishing to celebrate her life, a gathering will be held from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 533 Shawinigan Drive S.W. in Calgary. In accordance with her wishes, Martie’s ashes will be spread by her children. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Bow View Manor, 4628 Montgomery Blvd. N.W. Calgary, AB T3B 0K7. The family is especially grateful to the nursing, recreational, and support staff there who genuinely cared for Martie’s well-being.

In living memory of Martie Skrapec, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

Condolence Messages

  1. Jack Loucks :

    Barry, Candice and Drew,
What a neat lady your Mom was. I really wished I had reconnected with her earlier than I did. But, I am also very grateful and fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit with Aunt Martie over the past couple of years.

Our hearts go out to each of you for your loss.

  2. Sandra Stuart :

As one of the youngest of her nieces and nephews, my memories of Aunt Martie are few, but I will forever remember her as spunky. She had a great laugh, she couldn’t sit still, and she loved to share stories with Mom. Mom (Audry) loved her very much and is greatly saddened by Aunt Martie’s passing, as is Aunt Shirley. We are all sorry to see her go. All of our best wishes and condolences go out to Barry, Candice and Drew and their families.
