SKALK, Grant Robert

December 20, 1995 – September 16, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Grant Robert Skalk beloved son, brother and friend, on Friday, September 16, 2011 at the age of 15 years. After his seven month battle, he is now at peace.

Grant was such an outstanding man, words alone will never capture his essence, he was an amazing athlete, top student and excelled at everything he did. Most of all, once you knew Grant, you realised he was one of a kind – loyal, funny, smart, and he inspired everyone around him. His courage throughout his journey captured so many hearts and affected all who knew him.

He will be dearly missed by his sister Ali; mother Melanie; father Jim; scores of family members; his friends and community. His everlasting spirit and memory will live on and the impact he made will be forever etched in our hearts. Never forgotten!

A Celebration of Grant’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, Suite 302, 609 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 2A1, www.kidscancercare.ab.ca. Our special thanks to Dr. Strother, Kris Joyce, the wonderful team on Unit One, and the caring and considerate staff of dedicated professionals from the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

In living memory of Grant Skalk, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

Grant…gentle, pure, honest, loving, funny, strong, silent, bright light, witty, sensitive, amazing brother, devoted son, loyal friend, non judgemental, kind heart, handsome, accepting and peaceful. There are children that you meet in this world, even for a moment, that leave a lasting impression on you. From the moment I met Grant, that handsome young boy in third grade who asked a nervous room mom how her day was going and offered her a seat, I thought wow you have amazing parents and wow you are one amazing boy…I was right! Melanie, Jim, Ali and beloved Grant, getting to know all of you has been a blessing in our lives. You are a beautiful, caring family. There are people who will live a lifetime and never feel the love and joy that you all have for each other. Dear friends how we hope and pray that the love of friends and family will help you find peace. We love you very much and will be here for you now and always.

It was nice seeing you again at Grant’s service on Friday and it is unfortunate that it was not under better circumstances. The service was beautiful and a tremendous tribute to Grant. He was obviously very well liked and well respected based on the number of people who came to show their respects.

I remember the day Grant was born 15 years ago when you and I were working together Jim. You were such a proud father at that time and I am sure you will remain to be forever.
