Ivan Mearns Six passed away peacefully May 9, 2014 at Calgary, Alberta at the age of 96 years.
Ivan was predeceased by his father (Albert) and mother (Margaret) and first wife Ruth (McDowell).
He is survived by Anna, his beloved wife of 41 years, children (Doug, Steve, Ken, Karen, and Cameron), step-children (Pat, Don, and Carolyn-Joy) and numerous grand children and great grand children.
Ivan lived a long, full life. He loved the outdoors and had many fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and prospecting adventures with family and friends. Ivan was a meticulous craftsman and threw himself fully into his many projects such as making graphite fishing rods and faceting gemstones.
Ivan loved to travel and experience new places and cultures. One of his most treasured life experiences was the 3 years spent in Rumbai, Indonesia with Anna while working for Caltex. He always wanted to see what was around the next bend in the river or the next rise of the mountain.
Ivan was born August 22, 1917 in Stettler Alberta. He grew up on a farm near Stettler and financed part of his University education by working at mining operations near Kaslo and in the Bugaboo mountains of B.C. after high school. Ivan graduated from the University of Alberta in 1943 with a Mining Engineering degree followed by a Masters of Petroleum Engineering degree from the University of California at Berkley after a short working period at Turner Valley, Alberta. Ivan had a long and distinguished career in the oil industry as a Petroleum Engineer and was awarded a lifetime APEGA membership. One of his more remarkable work experiences was working on the CANOL project on the Mackenzie River with his best friend and brother in law Dr. Charles Stelck during World War II.
Ivan was a man of great integrity who believed that his Christian faith was the foundation of his life.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Beverley Age Care and the Calgary South Health Campus Unit 68 for the care and support they provided. The family will gather for a celebration of Ivan’s life in mid July, 2014.
