SINGH, Dr. Ram Rachhpal

Dr. Ram Rachhpal (Paul) Singh passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 13, 2013.

After completing his medical degree in India, Paul arrived in Ottawa, Canada in 1961 to train and complete his residency. In 1964 he returned briefly to India to marry his beloved wife Surinder Kaur. Paul left for Scotland where he completed his FRCP at Edinburgh. Paul and Surinder’s first stop as a married couple in Canada was in Halifax, Nova Scotia where Paul completed his specialist degree of Internal Medicine at Dalhousie University. After their stay in Halifax, they were drawn to the Rocky Mountains of Calgary, Alberta as its mountainous landscape is reminiscent of the Himalayas and their home in Kashmir, India. In Calgary, he began his successful career as an MD, specializing in Internal Medicine, where he served as director of the medical department at the Rockyview Hospital for close to 15 years. He was also a clinical associate professor at the University of Calgary in the Department of Medicine and a board member of the Calgary Sikh Society. His many other career accomplishments are too numerous to mention. He was greatly respected within the medical community and admired by his patients for his compassion. His love of medicine kept him practicing until his last days.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and eldest brother to a vast extended family and a friend to all. He loved hiking in the mountains with family and friends and had a passion for golf, which he has passed down to his 9 year old grandson. He enjoyed travelling all over the world and throughout his life had an insatiable desire for learning.

Paul is survived by his wife, Surinder, son and daughter Dev (wife, Kelly) and Kiren (husband, Rob), grandchildren Emmet, Sanah and Kiki and many extended family and friends who share in his loss. “Papa” will be deeply missed by his three grandchildren who he showered with love and affection at every opportunity.

A Celebration of Paul’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Plan Canada in memory of Dr. Ram R. Singh by contacting 1-800-387-1418 or any children’s charity of your choice.

In living memory of Dr. Ram Singh, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

    Dear Surinder,
It is with great sadness I have come to learn of Paul’s passing today. Please know that my mother Begum Meherunissa Husain, myself and our entire family share with you your grief and will pray for his soul that he may be find eternal peace.

My parents Mir Moazam Husain and Begum Meherunissa often talked fondly of you both in Hyderabad. They never forgot the kindness you showed when they visited Calgary some 20 years ago. My father also recalled the great conversations Paul and he had about our family’s Kashmir connection. He always commented what a fine individual Paul was. Alas my father also passed away just 3 weeks ago in Hyderabad at the age of 99. He had a good and distinguished life and our family is also suffering a painful loss. Time will heal and we are all grateful we were blessed to have been able to have him with us these many years.

Again our heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family.
    With best wishes,
    Roxana and Akbar Husain

  9. My condolences to the Singh family.
I first met Dr. Singh 33 years ago in the ER of the Rockyview. I became his patient after I was admitted for a mild M.I. At that time I thought he was a most compassionate man truly dedicated to his work and his patients. I last saw him about 5 years ago during a pre-surgery examination which he was attending to. I wasn’t sure it was him as he appeared to me to not have aged a year and I asked him if it was the same Dr. Singh – it was. Still a most wonderful and caring person.
    Score – Calgary -1 and Heaven +1
Truly everyone that knew him will miss him.

We were saddened to hear of your loss of your partner and best friend, Surinder. It is not for us to understand why the best are often the ones chosen to be taken too early from this world. You can take comfort in that Paul made a great contribution to our country, particularly our city with his compassionate way of giving aid to those who came to him for care.
We have sent a donation to Calgary Health Trust asking that the funds go into pediatric services as a way to have his love and concern for the younger generation continue to be felt.

  17. Dear Family Of Dr. Singh
It is with great sadness that my wife (Dr. Rossana Arcega) and myself (Dr. Scott Forsyth) learned about the sudden passing of Dr. Singh this past week. This news brought tears to our eyes. Since the very first days of medical practice Dr. Singh has been supportive and encouraging to me, backing me up when medical issues erupted for my patient’s, often seeing them the very same day I would call. He saved the life of more than a few in my practice alone. Although we seldom met in person, we would send messages to each other through the numerous consultations and he would often append a personal note along with his professional letter. In a medical system that feels increasingly fractionated and impersonal, Dr. Singh was an exception to the norm, making me feel as though I had a friend and colleague just down the street. I admire him very much, and will miss his presence for the remainder of my days. Our hearts go out to all of you during this time.
    Sincerely
    Scott and Rossana

  19. I read Dr Singh’s obituary this week and remembered Paul from the time he spent many years ago as a member of the University of Calgary Senate. I served as the Executive Officer of that group, and recall him as a charming, thoughtful and highly intelligent man who volunteered despite a very busy life with both his family and his medical career.
    My sincere condolences.

  26. Dr. Bruce Jespersen :

Dear Family of Dr. Paul Singh,

I was saddened to hear of your loss. Paul was a mentor to me as a green intern at the Holy Cross Hospital in the mid ’70’s, then a valued colleague over many years. Latterly he navigated me with skill and his reassuring manner through a personal health crisis, to a happy end. Perhaps it is only right that I should admire him for these reasons alone but there was more. He possessed a gentleness measured out with the softest touch in the business. His lilting voice was always not far from laughter and even now comes to mind in an instant as if at a chance meeting at the Rockyview. His easy manner belied a sharp professional acumen that nonetheless bristled at injustice or foolishness. Not least, his distinguished appearance and generosity of spirit reflected beautifully not only on his chosen profession and those of us who shared it, but also on his own Sikh community.
Your grief must be great. Please accept my sincere condolences. I shall miss Paul.

    Dr. Bruce Jespersen
