SIMPSON, George Delbert Lea

November 13, 1931 – December 19, 2012

George’s children, Wade (Jan), Cam (Melanie) and Christina (Wayne) are saddened to announce his passing, but take solace in knowing he is at peace and with Mum.

George was born in Calgary and raised in Winnipeg and Claresholm. It was while in high school in Claresholm that he met the love of his life, Joan Amundsen. George and Joan married in 1953 and settled in Calgary to raise a family. George had a long, fulfilling career as first an elementary school teacher and then a principal. In 1973 he had the opportunity to teach at a Canadian Department of National Defense school and the entire family moved to Germany for three years. It was the adventure of a lifetime. His kids remember the delight their father took in showing them the sights and giving them a history lesson at the same time. After retirement, George was able to continue to use his teaching skills, traveling to a number of countries in Africa with the Canadian International Development Agency. For his commitment to education, he was awarded a Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. George treasured his family and his friends. He loved soccer, wood working, and camping with Joan and assorted puppies, music and a good single malt with a fine cigar. He was known for his loyalty, sense of humour and bigger than life personality. Big Guy was a great father, a loving husband, and a good friend. He will be missed by his kids, granddaughters Kirsten, Amy and Joely, and step-grandkids Eric and Miranda. George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan, and his brother, Lyn.

Always loved. Never forgotten.

    Dear Christina, Cameron, and Wade

Please accept my sincere oondolences. As you know George and I were friends for many decades and I’m deeply saddened by his passing but I’m also grateful that he has been released from the torture of life that he has endured since the passing of his beloved Joan. George was a person you could trust and his loyalty was unwavering. I, personally, shall miss him as will you. However, George was the kind of person who left us all with happy memories and the meaning of true friendship. May he rest in peace and may you cherish his memory forever.

    Love
    Garfield

  5. It is with deep sadness that we have learned of George’s death. It was because of George that I had the opportunity to teach at Baden Intermediate from 1975-78. George, Joan and family took us under their wing and we spent numerous occasions at their home in Hugelsheim. Christina, Cameron and Wade, please accept our deepest and sincerest condolences at the loss of both your mother and father in such a short time. We remember you fondly as a family.

    Respectfully,

    Fern Bourassa
