SIMONS, Carol Ann (nee Burleigh)

January 5, 1940 – Montreal, QC
September 30, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Carol Ann Simons, beloved wife of Richard of Calgary, passed away peacefully at Rockyview General Hospital with her family at her side on Monday, September 30, 2013 at the age of 73 years.

Carol never forgot her roots, having grown up in Montreal. She graduated from nursing at McGill and worked in Montreal for a period of time before she and Richard moved out west, first to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and then finally Alberta. They raised their family in Calgary and she returned to nursing in 1989. Carol loved painting, singing, quilting, crafting, camping, and being surrounded by good people. She will be greatly missed by her family, extended family and the many dear friends she met over the years.

Besides her loving husband Richard, she will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law Paul and Wendy; daughter and son-in-law Laurie and Scott; and her three grandsons, Ian, Aaron and Adam.

A Celebration of Carol’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Sincere thanks to the nursing staff of Unit 73 of the Rockyview General Hospital and Doctors Bassinger, Edworthy, Chan, and Mish.

I cannot imagine a world without Carole! We were neighbors in Verdun – neighbors in the classic sense – wandering in and out of each others homes for sugar, for candy, for company under the guise of homework. We both wanted medicine – she nursing and I a physician. And we did it. Carole brought so much compassion and comfort to those who came under her care. And Richard, a classmate at Verdun High was the lucky one to share her life and grow such a wonderful family. I have not seen Carole since our time in Verdun but she is in my heart once again – in that special place that we hold for those who have meaning to us. Love and grace to Richard, Paul and Laurie and their families. Know that your mother and grandmother was one of a kind and will be in our hearts forever. Richard MacKenzie

  6. Dear Dick

I am thinking of the happy times Carol and Sylvia and you and I shared both in Calgary and in Slocan. I believe I can truthfully say I know some of the depth of loss you are now feeling having lost my best friend and life partner now almost five years ago. All I can say, is we were lucky men, you and I, to have had such wonderful women in our lives.

Richard: Our thoughts are with you and your family with the passing of Carol to her next life. If the purpose of life is love, Carol was exemplary of how we should live. Her caring for others, her smile and laughter under the most difficult times and her zest for being a part of so many different group leaves us all with great memories. The Calgary Gyro Club was extremely fortunate so many years ago when the Simons became a part of this fraternity. Diane and Ron Carter

  10. My condolences to Richard, Paul, Wendy and the rest of the family. I was so sorry to hear of Carol’s passing. I worked with her for 16 years at the Holy Cross and the Rockyview Hospital, Unit 74. She was a great and caring nurse, a pleasure to work with. We also had fun times when Carol, Fran and I would get together with our husbands after work on Saturday nights. After she retired we still had Stage West nights. I know these last few years had not been easy for her. I will always remember her strength, she lived life to the fullest and tried not to let things slow her down any more than necessary.
You will be greatly missed Carol.
    God Bless you!

  13. Dear Richard and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. Carol was a nursing classmate of mine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital of Montreal. We were a small class and remained in contact from then until now.
Carol was a vibrant and active person, right up to the time she left us. She readily acknowledged she was not a morning person; likely because she and another nursing classmate (and also a school mate) would be up talking longer after they should have been asleep! No more ‘plug in the sink, tap running’ to get her up for duty / class.
Carol will be missed by all who had the privilege to know and love her as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
    Ann

Richard & family…..I worked with Carol on Unit 74, at RGH, for several years before she retired. Carol was always so meticulous, neat & tidy….always doing such a fantastic job changing dressings, giving medication or whatever. She took such pride in doing the job properly. Even when we had potlucks on the unit, Carol would bring her dish all done up so fancy, that it was the envy of everyone! Several patients would call her the ‘matron’…she got a kick out of that. She’d talk about camping & her small trailor that was just the perfect size for the two of them. And she’d speak, with such love in her voice & in her eyes, about her ‘Mr. Clean’ man…I think that’s what she called you Richard….because you looked just like the guy in the tv commercials! Carol always had a big smile & would love to talk to you at get togethers at Frans, or even if we met accidentally somewhere. I was recently thinking about her & hoped she was doing well. Now I KNOW that she really is doing well & is very very happy. I know that for a fact! Remember, Carol is still watching over you. Talk to her, she hears you & loves you & still watches over you! She’s in the best place of all. Take care. Remember, love never dies!
