SIEGLER, Siegfried “Sig”
December 29, 1926 – December 15, 2011
Siegfried Siegler of Calgary passed away peacefully on December 15, 2011, at the Chinook Hospice.
Sig is survived by his beloved wife Lisa Siegler; brothers Rudi (Susi) Siegler and Eberhard (Selma) Siegler; sons Norbert (Iris) Siegler and Manfred (Sue) Siegler; grandsons Jeremy (Ioana), Benjamin, Jonathan, Christopher, David and Nicholas; and, great grandchildren Ellie and Alex.
Sig was born in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, to parents Richard and Helene Siegler. Sig was unwillingly drafted at a young age into WWII serving on the front lines for the German army and survived a gunshot wound, being buried by a hand grenade, plus several years in a Russian POW camp where he played harmonica and told jokes to help people escape the horrors of war by focusing on happier memories. Shortly after his release, on his way home, he met his future wife, Lisa, in East Germany. Sig worked at Mercedes Benz in Stuttgart as part of the team working on developing fuel injection technology. He moved to Canada with his family in the mid-1950’s, then to California, and back to Calgary in the mid-1970’s. In Calgary, Sig worked for many years as a 4th Class Steam Ticket Engineer at the Foothills Hospital. Sig enjoyed many happy years of retirement, dancing, camping, vacations, time with friends and family, a good joke and playing the harmonica.
The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at the Chinook Hospice for caring and keeping Sig comfortable in his last days, allowing us to be with him, and facilitating his transition so he could leave with dignity and honour. A private service was held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
