SHUGG, Robert Gordon

November 11, 1948 – September 13, 2011

It is with extreme sadness that the family of Rob Shugg announce his unexpected death. He is survived by his wife, Karen (nee Tilley), daughter Jenn, son David, father Gordon, sister Pam (Rick) Killam, brother Glenn (Carmel), sister-in-law Jennifer Davidson, and a wonderful extended network of family and friends.

Rob grew up in North Vancouver and graduated UBC with a B.Sc.Hon. in Geophysics. His entire career was spent in the oil industry, with Mobil Oil, Poco Petroleums, Burlington Resources, and most recently Conoco Phillips.

He was passionate about all things in life. He loved ocean sailing in a good wind, and the feel of powder snow under his skis. For over 20 years Rob was an active member of the Canadian Ski Patrol System, and coordinated their involvement in the 1988 Olympics.

He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in his mid-twenties, and for the remainder of his life he faced the challenges of this disease without complaint. He had a zest for life and a devoted interest in scientific research, whether for the treatment of MS or for innovative ways to look at petroleum exploration.

Rob always maintained a positive outlook, and was inspirational in his pro-active, self-disciplined approach to living. A part of him will be with us forever.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
If friends wish, donations may be made to Direct-MS at 5119 Brockington Rd. NW, Calgary T2L 1R7.

In living memory of Robert Shugg, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200.

  18. Dear family,
How sad it was to read of Rob’s passing. Sailing with him on Skilfish left many memories. Especially that of Rob crawling forward to pull 200 feet of anchor line back into the fore peak. It had been swept overboard in a very rough sea.

  23. I was deeply saddened to hear of Rob’s suddendeath. I worked with him at Burlington and Conocophillps for many years. Rob’s professional life was very important to him. He was an extremely capable geophysicist and was always looking for new technical advancements that would enhance/expand our interpretations. We tried to give Rob projects that would be challenging and offer new techniques to look at our geophysical data. Rob never complained about his MS or the challenges it presented him every day. He approached every day with enthusiasm, optimism and never ever let his physical limitations influence his zest for life. I will miss him. He was a good man!

  30. I was very saddened to hear of Rob’s passing. I worked with Rob while at Burlington and was always so impressed with Rob’s clear and obvious decision to live and celebrate life to the fullest. Intellectually, professionally and personally he was a remarkable man. Whether discussing earth science or the latest advances in MS research his positive attitude, curiosity and that smile where truly inspiring. I wish you strength and peace in this difficult time. We’ve lost a member of our Calgary G&G society and it won’t be the same without him.

  34. Dear Karen and David …
It was a great pleasure and honour to meet the Shugg family while coaching David as a young teenage soccer player. That was the blessing of volunteer coaching … you’d meet these special families that radiated class, integrity and genuine appreciation. I’m not sure I knew Rob was a fellow geoscientist at the time … but I was captivated by he and Karen’s wonderful commitment to parenting and to their amazing relationship. Here’s to a “real beauty” !!
