SHEPARD, Alice Elsa

December 10, 1926 – March 3, 2013

Alice Elsa Shepard, beloved wife of Art (Arthur), passed away peacefully at home Sunday, March 3rd, 2013 with her husband and children at her side. She is lovingly remembered by Art, her husband of 60 years, her children Colleen (David) and Russ (Irena), and her six grandchildren Christopher, Stephen, David, Glenn, Alex and Anna, as well as her brother Reinhart and sister Adeline.

Alice was born on the family homestead in Hay Lakes, Alberta. She and Art were married in Edmonton in 1952, started their family and eventually moved to Calgary in 1962. Alice loved to garden and her flower beds were always the envy of the neighbourhood. Music was also an integral part of Alice’s life. She was a long standing member of many church choirs and took great pleasure in listening to her children and grandchildren perform. Alice’s family was her greatest joy, supporting and encouraging her children and grandchildren in all of their endeavours. Her support wasn’t limited to just the family, Alice was an avid Calgary Flames and Stampeder fan watching as many games as she could and coaching from her chair. In her later years, as Alice’s health declined, additional support within their home was needed. Our family is very grateful for all of the wonderful caregivers and doctors who have cared for Alice over the years.

Funeral Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (3527 Boulton Road N.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, March 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Daranne Harris Presiding. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 781-1978, www.heartandstroke.ca.

Condolence Messages

  1. For the family of Alice Shepard,

To Art, Colleen and Russ Shepard,
Jean let me know that Alice passed away last week. I had just mailed a card to her as I have been thinking a lot about her and your family; when I sent it I did not know she was so ill. I hope everything was peaceful at the end.
Alice was one of my favorite patients. She often came in after some calamity caused by her energetic gardening, canning, or cleaning activity that she probably shouldn’t have been doing! Even when her health declined, she refused to believe she was no longer capable of all things. She always had a smile and a hug for me, and did her best to put on a brave face when she wasn’t feeling well. She taught me a lot about shared decision-making with patients, as she usually knew what she wanted to do, and was not afraid to express it.
It was a privilege to have known her, and to witness the strong support and love within your family.
    I will always remember Alice.
    Best wishes,
    Peggy Aufricht

  2. I had the honour of knowing Alice for many months, several years ago when I supported her at her home, and I have never forgotten her. I am sad to see that she has passed away. Thinking of Art, their children and grandchildren.
