Olive was born in Fern Glen, ON in 1913. In 1918, she traveled by train with her family to Kindersley, SK. and later by wagon to the Tisdale – Eldersley Area of SK., where her family homesteaded and farmed. She married Russell Shemko in 1937 and settled in Saskatoon, SK.
Post WWII Olive and Russell founded Midtown Farm Equipment which became Saskatchewan’s largest short line farm equipment firm. They sold it to a group of Alberta investors in the late sixties and the company became part of Foremost Industries. Olive was an active member of Eastern Star and Lions Ladies.
Olive was forthright, steadfastly independent and passionate about fashion, travel, gardening and further education. She was caretaker to husband Russell during the last eight years of his life (deceased 1997) and then moved from Saskatoon to The Renoir Seniors Apartments in Calgary, AB where she enjoyed special friendships until August 2010. After falling and breaking her second hip, she later became a resident of the Beverly Glenmore Nursing Home.
The family is especially appreciative to granddaughter Lori Forand and her husband Lorne for their ongoing involvement in Olive’s care.
Thank you to the caregivers of Comfort Keepers, Glenmore Carewest Rehabilitation Hospital, Brentwood Care Centre and Beverly Glenmore Centre. A private family memorial will be held on July 28, 2014.
