SHEA, Mary Magdalen FCJ

January 3, 1922 – Camrose, Alberta
November 8, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Sister Mary Shea, Faithful Companion of Jesus, lived in Bethany Care Centre from October 2016 until her death on Wednesday, November 8, 2017.

Born in Camrose, AB, she was given the name of Mary Magdalen. Mary was the eighth in a family of nine. Entering the FCJ Sisters in Calgary in 1941, Mary made her vows in 1943 and then attended normal school. She taught at St. Mary’s Girls’ before being sent to England in preparation for final vows. After studies in Fribourg, Switzerland and Toronto, she served in schools in Toronto, Calgary, and in Edmonton at Immaculate Conception boarding school. Her adventurous spirit was evident in her leadership of the community that was asked to open Marymount, Midnapore as a boarding school in 1966. From 1968 until 1973 Sr. Mary led the Lethbridge community until she was appointed as Regional Superior for Canada and local leader of the new FCJ venture in Oyen. She was back in Lethbridge from 1979 until 2001 with the exception of four years at the Generalate in England. Pastoral work in Assumption Parish was a joy. Next Sister moved to Smithers, BC. Quickly she took an active part in the life of St. Joseph’s Parish visiting people in their homes and welcoming them to the FCJ house. She was honoured to sit with the Beaver Clan in Moricetown. In April 2012 she relocated to Sacred Heart Convent, Calgary. Throughout her life Sr. Mary shared her talents of needlework, singing and cooking. Mary’s deep faith and desire to serve in all matters were the hallmark of her life. These qualities will be much missed by all. May she rest in peace.

All are welcome to the convent for prayers on Monday, November 13, at 7:00 p.m. and the funeral Mass on Tuesday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m. (219-19 Ave. SW).

The FCJ Sisters and Sr. Mary’s family are very grateful for the wonderful care given by the nursing staff at Bethany and Sacred Heart Convent. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FCJ Christian Life Centre or to your favourite charity in Sr. Mary’s memory. A tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
