SHAW, Goldie Alice

August 31, 1925 – Calgary, Alberta
February 21, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Goldie Alice Shaw, 89, passed away on February 21, 2015.

Goldie was a strong pioneer woman who was raised on a homestead near Nanton with her dear sisters Mildred and Emily. She took nursing at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary where she proved to be an endearing, but feisty, challenge to the grey nuns. She married Jack Shaw in 1950 and he remained the love of her life and soul mate until his death in 2011. Together they raised four children on their own dairy farm north of Cochrane in what could only be described as an extremely loving, chaotic, fun and wonderful environment. Jack and Goldie ultimately moved to Chestermere where their home remained the loving and constant centre for a close-knit, large and loving family, and their numerous friends. Anyone who needed a temporary haven was welcomed with open arms. This legacy of love and family closeness lives on through her children, Wallace (Carole), Norman (Paula), Donald (Colleen), and Jacqueline (Charlie); her grandchildren, Ryan (Emma), Trevor (Leslie), Michael (Erin), Adam (Emily), Kelly (Dana), Emily and Thomas; her great-grandchildren, Aiden, Owen, Etta, Monroe, Norah and the new little one coming; and her “adopted” son, Trevor ( Zoe) and grandchildren, Matthew (Chantal) and Whitney. She will live on in their hearts forever. A heartfelt thank you to her caring caregivers, Erin, Charleen, and most especially, Jon, who lived with and provided loving care to Jack and Goldie for years and who has become a part of the Shaw family.

A private memorial service will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, Condolences may be forwarded through

Condolence Messages

  1. So sorry to hear of Goldie’s passing. What a life well lived! My fondest memories are when as a teenager or young adult all of us who were friends with Jacqueline would descend for an afternoon of waterskiing or a spontaneous BBQ or sleepover and she would just take it all in stride and love having us around. Always a very welcoming home and Goldie set the tone for that! Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Wally, please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your mother. My sister is currently at Southwood and I saw that your mother’s name was in the little curio of angels that they keep. Her obituary is an outstanding tribute to her and your family. Take care Delores

  7. Dear Jackie and the entire Shaw family. Very sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. I only met Goldie on a few occasions but my wife, Darlene (Burkinshaw) was very close to your family and shared such fond memories of the warmth and enthusiasm that was such a part of Goldie and the family she raised. She was a blessing to many.

  8. Cookie BURKINSHAW :

    Hi Jackie,
I just “happened” to glance at the Herald last week & noticed your Mom had passed away. My sincere condolences to you and your family.
I mentioned it to Kevin Orriss.

My Mom passed away nearly 2 years ago, March 30. 2013. She appeared to be in really good health for almost 92 years but she had a heart attack & was gone instantly. I was with her on the Saturday afternoon. We sold her big blue house April 2014 and it has since been demolished. It was a double lot and two new homes will be built on the property.
It seems weird to drive by.

I wanted to let you know that I’m thinking of you.

  9. Diane Williams :

I will remember Goldie as a kind and friendly cousin, especially when I was in my early teens in the 50’s. We had great times at Auntie Lula and Uncle York’s cabin on the east side of Chestermere Lake.
All the best, Diane and Gary Williams
