SHARPE, Douglas Allan “Doug”

October 26, 1946 – Duncan, B.C.
February 17, 2014 – Calgary, AB

On Monday, February 17, 2014 at the age of 67 years, Douglas Allan Sharpe went Home to spend eternity with His Lord and Savior.

Our beloved Husband, Dad and Grandpa was born on October 26, 1946 in Duncan, British Columbia. Most of his childhood years were spent in Castor, Alberta and it was there that he met Connie Welsh. In 1967, they pledged their lives to each other in marriage. Their eldest daughter, Trina, was born in 1971 in High Prairie, Alberta. In 1976, their youngest, Tara, was born in Calgary, Alberta. Doug had a long, rewarding career with ATCO Gas and was also involved in local politics.

Before Retirement, Doug spent the remaining years of his career in the Airdrie ATCO office. A family man and treasured friend, he always had a laugh, a joke, or a story to share. He was always ready to offer a listening ear and had such a generous, kind spirit. Throughout their married lives, Connie and Doug loved to travel together. An avid photographer and motorcycle enthusiast, Doug enjoyed many road trips with Connie, family and friends. Shortly into retirement, Doug’s diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma charted a new course for him as he had at times, a very difficult battle to fight. He bravely fought, even enjoying a short remission in which he found time to become a volunteer driver for other cancer patients. In this time, he also became the very proud Grandfather of three beautiful grandchildren whom he loved so deeply.

Doug is survived by his loving wife Connie of Airdrie; daughters Trina (Steve) Dunsmoor of Kelowna and Tara (Jacob) Topping of Calgary; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Oliver and Alexis Topping. Doug is also survived by his three siblings Sheryl Jackson and family of Calgary, Wayne (Linda) Sharpe and family of Leduc, and Cindy (Marty) Miller of Spruce Grove.

Doug was predeceased by his father Eric; mother Elsie; and brother-in-law Russ Jackson.

A Memorial Service for Doug will be held at Centre Street Church (3900- 2nd Street N.E. Calgary, Alberta) on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank Dr. Bahlis, Dr. Neri and the staff of Units 57 and 46 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and FMC for their compassionate care throughout his illness. If so desired, donations in memory of Doug may be made to a charity of your choice.

  2. Connie, Trina, Tara & families, we have so many fond memories of Doug. He was a wonderful neighbor who would always come over after a snow fall to shovel our walk, or pop on in our garage for a visit. We remember countless times him having “conversations” with our young son, Denver – they had a lot of laughs. He was such a caring man who we will remember fondly and often. Wes, Suzy & Denver David

Connie, I’m so sorry for your loss. You are far too young to face this. I truly hope your health is on an upswing, as you have enough to cope with. As you know I grew up with Doug; he was always a kind, caring, gentle and very funny man! The world has lost one of the really ‘good guys’.

    As always,

  10. The Sharpe Family,
I am away and unable to attend Doug’s service but wanted to extend to you my deepest condolences. We were colleagues at the “Gas Company” and I just wanted you all to know what a tremendous contributor Doug was and especially his focus on the customer. On his retirement he certainly left the Company a better place as I know he did with respect to his community and family. My thoughts are with you all during this especially difficult time.
    Sincerely,
    Doug Graham

  11. Dear Auntie Connie, Trina, Tara and families,
I am so sorry that I couldn’t be with you on Thursday, but I wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about Uncle Doug. He was one of my favorite uncles. He was such a wonderful person with a great sense of humor and will be SO missed. He was always willing to lend a hand and was so kind and thoughtful. It was a privilege to know him. My first knowledge of Doug came when I was in grade 2 and I bought a certain black Welsh pony named Pepper. Grandpa Welsh helped with that deal and I am pretty sure that Doug owned Pepper before we bought her. I can remember thinking how cool Connie and Doug were when they stopped in at our house in Stettler to tell us they were engaged. I remember one time we babysat their cat – a kind, crazy Siamese number that hid down in our basement for part of the time and pouted at being left. Years and family reunions went by and Trina and Tara came along and we used to see your family in Calgary when we all lived there for a brief time. Then, after college, I started working at the Gas Company where Doug worked and we used to cross paths sometimes – which usually resulted in some laughs. Doug gave the bridal toast at my wedding and his help with that was much appreciated. Then, about 5 years ago, when I was taking my kids to Disneyland and needed a place to stay and a ride to the airport in Calgary, Connie and Doug graciously opened their home to us and Uncle Doug drove us back and forth to the airport. We were also privileged to have Doug and Connie visit us in Victoria not that long ago. He was so interested in Blaire and her horse back riding – that was much appreciated. He even took some pictures and sent them to us. It was so nice of Connie and Doug to take time to visit us here on the Island. Those are some cherished memories! We also got a chance to visit last summer when I drove down with mom and dad for a quick visit. I am thankful for every encounter I have had with your family over the years. Doug will never be forgotten and I am looking forward to seeing him again in Heaven someday. In the meantime, I know that heaven will be enjoying his great sense of humor, twinkling eyes and wonderful smile. I love you Uncle Doug! Take care, Auntie Connie and family. Talk to you soon… Pam Katunar (and Chad, Blaire and Fred) from Victoria, BC

  13. Dear 1st family,
I am very sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. He was always very kind to me even when Trina and I started having problems with our marriage. Despite of what you may think, I loved Trina and I loved Doug for a father. I only found out recently from my sister that Doug had passed away. I will never forget your laugh, your patience with me and I can only hope that I will turn out to be half the father of my two children that you were to your girls. I am so sorry Trina. He was a a true Angel to this Earth and Heaven is a better place now that he has found peace. God bless you.
