SHANNON, Alma May

March 2, 1921– Carstairs, AB
June 23, 2013– Calgary, AB

Alma May Shannon passed away surrounded by the love of her family on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Calgary South Health Campus.

Born March 1921 in Carstairs and raised in Didsbury, Alma had a very rich 92 years of life. She worked for many years at the Didsbury Post Office and knew most everyone in town by their box number. Fashionable clothes, stilettos, great hair styles, long nails and her amazing zest for life were her trademarks. She moved to Calgary in the 1980’s where she developed a wonderful network of friends, but returned to Didsbury to golf and curl.

Alma always had fun in her life and had a great sense of humour. She loved a good game of bridge and lit up a room with her smile. She adored music, dancing and socializing with the many people who were drawn to her charismatic company. She loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her extended family very much and was absolutely wonderful with children. She was a master knitter, winning many awards for her unique creations around the province. She also loved to cook and would prepare ‘care packages’ of buns and goodies for the many people in her life at Christmas.

During the last few years pain issues made it difficult for Alma to engage in activities that she enjoyed but she made sure she attended the annual Shannon Clan gathering Christmas Eve to socialize with family.

Alma is survived by her daughter, Donna Galvin; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Rita Shannon; grandchildren Lara, James, Graham and Erin; and great-grandchildren Luna, Tia, Brooke and Ethan.

She was predeceased by her husband Kelvin; parents Rob and Emma Cunningham; brother Clarence (Hoop), and her sister Lois Shannon.

At Alma’s request, a Celebration of her Life will be held at a later date.

  3. Elizabeth Peters :

    Dear Galvin Family,
I was very saddened to learn of Elma’s passing. She had a tremendous life force, and even in the past few years, when she was in pain much of the time, she always maintained her strong and direct way of being. She was a compassionate and caring woman, and always had time to listen. I have strong memories of anticipating her baking at Christmas, and remember even as a child, the small packages of fresh buns, that would appear when she visited.
My love and best wishes to you and your family
    Elizabeth
