SERVAIS, John James

December 23, 1937 – Toronto, Ontario
January 11, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

John, beloved husband of Kathryn Servais (nee Chant) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the age of 80 years.

John graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master Degree in Economics and he worked for thirty years at Shell Canada before retiring from an executive management position. He also volunteered extensively for many organizations: Meals on Wheels, Inn from the Cold and Habitat for Humanity, just to name a few. He found great comfort in his strong Catholic faith and his participation in the church. John’s greatest passion was skiing, and on the slopes was where he felt a great joy and freedom. He also curled with Kathryn earlier in their marriage. He loved the outdoors, hiking and biking and in his sixties decided to start hitting the gym and lifting weights. He took a keen interest in his family’s genealogy and documenting their history.

Besides his loving wife, Kathryn, John is survived by his four children and their spouses, Laura Elizabeth (Jamie) Urquhart, John Matthew, Joseph Benjamin (Michelle) Servais and Mary Candice; his four grandchildren, Evan, Sean, Emma and Max; and his sister Anne of Vancouver, BC. John was predeceased by his parents Clifford and Camilla Servais.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, P.O. Box 274, Okotoks, AB, T1S 1A5, Telephone: (403) 995-4673, www.countryhospice.org.

The family would like to thank all the people who provided John with the best care over the last few years: Rockyview General Hospital, South Health Campus and the Foothills Country Hospice Society in Okotoks.

  5. I always admired John. For his determination to ‘walk the talk’. Actually he never talked about his walks; but he certainly walked – Chairman of the Hospital Board, broking his leg campaigning for a charity are two of the things I know that he did and admire him for. We need more ‘walkers’ like him and we are all poorer for his passing. I know you will miss him, as we all will, but you should be proud of him. May we all imitate his example.

  6. Nancy McCormick :

I was surprised and saddened to learn of John’s recent passing. As a former Shell colleague, I always appreciated John’s authenticity, his honest and forthright communication as well as his terrific sense of humour.
When I think of “Smilin’ John” … I also think of his dear friends and colleagues, Wayne Stewart, Murray Rose and Fred Prior. Where there was 1 … there was usually 3 others not far behind … chuckling, laughing and teasing one another. What a terrific foursome of friends they were – very inspiring, sometimes challenging, always willing to volunteer and lend their support (including financial) to various not-for-profit organizations, definitely memorable … and always great fun to be with!
John, we will miss you … Our night sky is a little brighter these days with your “shining star” well-positioned in this great universe. It was an honour to work with you all those many years. I offer my sincere condolences to your family, friends and loved ones.

  14. Marnie Ferguson :

John was the senior member of seven Toronto cousins who were the children of two sisters,Camilla and Madeleine. He was the cool older cousin who would arrive every Christmas afternoon with a warm smile, friendly greeting and genuine interest in each of us younger ones. Usually there was a new LP on the stereo … maybe Bob Newhart… and we would listen and laugh but mostly enjoy the loud guffaws from John and our brother Dave.
John’s move to Calgary meant we had only brief interactions either in Toronto, later by email and once on the ski hills at Sunshine with his buddies. And, of course, in true John fashion, he quietly arrived in Toronto for the funeral of his good friend and cousin David. He was such a thoughtful and kind gentleman!
From Toronto we send our sympathy and prayers to Kathryn and Anne and the Servais children and grandchildren.
