September 30, 2014 – Calgary, AB
Marie Senkow, formerly of Canora, SK, passed away at the Beverly Glenmore Care Centre, Calgary, AB, on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the age of 87 years.
Marie was born on July 12, 1927 in Enderby, BC to immigrant parents Michael and Margaret (Stefanyshin) Beblow. She was the eighth oldest in a family of nineteen children. In the fall of 1934 the family moved to the Wynot district near Wishart, SK where Marie attended the Westmoor School. Marie liked to play ball and really enjoyed the outdoors. From January, 1943 until August, 1944 Marie resided in Port Arthur, ON (presently Thunder Bay) where she went to babysit a cousin, and subsequently found employment at the Port Arthur General Hospital as a nursing aid. Upon returning from Ontario, Marie met her future husband, Fred, and after a brief courtship, they were married on November 23, 1944 at St Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton, SK. They resided on the original Senkow homestead south of Buchanan, SK. and subsequently purchased the family farm in 1954. In November, 1963 Marie and Fred moved to Canora, SK and from June, 1965 until her retirement in 1993, Marie was a receptionist for Drs. M & S Lee-Sing. Marie was relocated to Calgary in the fall of 2009 to live with her middle son, Craig, and his family. Shortly after her move, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease necessitated placement in a care home where she resided until her death. In the later years of her life Marie enjoyed going for rides, as long as someone else was driving. She was also fond of knitting and made many a hat, neck warmer, and mittens for many of her grandchildren and friends. Maire would read, and loved to collect some memorabilia from the The Royal Family. As well she loved listening to Ukrainian Music on the Radio.
