SENDEWICZ, Maria (Motcha Mikolaiko)

December 7, 1919 – April 12, 2012

Maria, much loved mother and grandmother, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital early Thursday morning, April 12, 2012 at the age of 92 years.

Maria was born to Leon and Wasiliny Mikolaiko in Melitopol, Russia. She married Jan Sendewicz on April 24, 1946 in Ludwigsburg, Germany at the age of 27. Jan and Maria moved to Heilbronn, Germany where their daughter Lucja (Lucy) was born April 30, 1947. The young family immigrated to Sherbrooke, QC November 1960, where they resided for 5 years. In 1965 the family moved to Calgary, AB, where Maria resided with her husband and daughter. She was a care giver at the Baker Centre. Maria is remembered and loved for her happy, joyful spirit and her love of gardening. She loved the simplicity of life. She enjoyed the sparrows and found delight in the smallest of creation. Her gardens were in comparison to the greatest most beautiful of gardens, and described like the Buchart Gardens in magnificence.

Maria is survived by her daughter Lucja (Lucy), Sendewicz; grandchildren, Dr. John L Fernandes (Paige), Dr. Andrew D. Fernandes (Bonnie), Jonathan R. Fernandes P.Eng., Ania M. Czarnekncki, EMT; and her great-granddaughters Jordann and Brooklyn.

Maria is predeceased by her parents, as well as her husband of fifty-six years, Jan Sendewicz. Jan and Maria were loyal to each other throughout their entire marriage.

Maria will be lovingly remembered for her dedication to the family. Maria had suffered with declining health and was cared for by her daughter, Lucy, until December 26, 2011 at which time she was admitted to the Rockyview General Hospital with Pneumonia. Lucy wishes to express her fondest appreciation and acknowledgment for Nurse Denise Anderson of Unit 56 at the Rockyview General Hospital. Denise showed great compassion for Maria and Lucy. Lucy would also like to acknowledge Dr. Patrick Wong for his care and support during her mother’s illness.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through
