SEMKOW, Stephanie (nee Opalick )

March 24, 1923 – October 27, 2009

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Stephanie Semkow of natural causes at Foothills Hospital at the age of 86 years.

She will be dearly missed by her loving son Brian W. Semkow of Hong Kong; her daughter and son-in-law, Tanis and Rod Carter of Surrey, BC; and grandchildren, Daniel, Brad and Matthew Carter; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Wally in June 1994.

Stephanie was born in Winnipeg, MB to Lena and Mike Opalick. There she grew up, met Wally, and married in June 1950. They moved to Alberta and lived in many small towns where he was employed in the oil industry. In 1955 they settled in Edmonton and raised their two children. In 1972 they were transferred to Calgary. Stephanie truly enjoyed playing bridge, meeting new people, and entertaining family and friends. During Wally’s retirement years they enjoyed travelling-snow bird trips to the US, visiting grandchildren on the coast, and leisurely cruises. After Wally’s death, Stephanie continued with her activities and travelling, even as far as the Great Wall of China at the age of 74. Recently, Stephanie’s health began to deteriorate. She was greatly admired for her dignity, inner strength, and courage with which she faced and survived her several medical challenges.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W. 403-241-0044), on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers we know she would appreciate donations to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: (403) 944 – 2433. You may forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  2. Harrie Vredenburg :

I was very sad to hear of the passing of your mother, Brian and Tanis. I know how much she meant to you, Brian, and how she struggled in vain to regain her health recently. I know that she will leave a large hole in your life. Although I only had a half-dozen brief conversations with her over the years, I always felt a special link because your mother was born two days before my own mother and you, Brian, and I shared many a concern as our mothers aged. My deepest condolences, Harrie

  3. Tanis and Brian, I have alot of good memories of your mother. I remember her very clean house and her really excellent cooking ( especially the roasts and the little cinnamon buns that were cooked in a cake tin) . She seemed so organized and competent. When Tanis and I spent so many years at each other’s houses I always appreciated the differences in our families’ life styles. I remember playing countless hours of two person bridge – maybe we even played with your parents Tanis, I can’t remember. Your Mom always had a strong will and opinions and I admired that in her as well. I hope you both can appreciate your Mom’s long life and how much you meant to her. Tanis, I just had too much going on with work to make it to the funeral. I am sorry and I feel badly for not attending. I almost made it. Thanks again for calling the other night Tanis.
